Hate to do this, but....

I have to get rid of my dog. Long story short, my girlfriend will be moving in soon and she has horrible allergic reactions to dogs (lumps, rashes, etc).

Any way I dice it, I can't keep him. My mom is also allergic, so she can't really keep him either.

What's the best way to ensure he gets a good home? Not sure how to go about this.

BTW - He is a 100lb Black Lab, 3.5 years old. Great dog.

Bah, I had to give my chocolate lab up back when too, I feel your pain.

How is he with small dogs and cats?

I started with people I knew and trusted...co-workers and friends.

My wife is severely allergic too but she puts up with allegra, a benedryll at night and an occasional hit of albuturol every couple of months for our dogs.

Is it your idea to get rid of the dog or hers?

George Graham Vest speaking:

"Gentlemen of the jury, the best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter whom he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us -- those whom we trust with our happiness and good name -- may become traitors in their faith. The money that a man has he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolute, unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world -- the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous -- is his dog.

"Gentlemen of the jury, a man's dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow, and the snow drives fiercely, if only he can be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

"If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace, and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death."

Ditto, im highly allergic to cats but i had one for 5 years when my cousin couldnt keep her. First few months were bad but your body will adapt and build an immunity. Tell ehr to suck it up for the first few months and see if things change before you make that choice.

Hell I gave up a bike for a girl and regretted it, i could never imagine ditching my dogs for one.

first you will be asked to give up the dog, after that it will be something else like riding. she should have known it was a package deal with the pooch and if she couldn't handle it that's her fault. it's kind of like dating someone who smokes when you can't stand it and then when you move in together they have to give it up?

if YOU really want to do it then go for it but you will severely regret it if things with the g/f don't work out.

Imagine things don't work out, she isnt a fiance or a wife. Giving up a personal belonging or riding is different. Once you give up that dog, you can't just take it back.

She'll have to deal with allergens throughout life.. the dog is but one in a pool of many in life and the reactions can be mitigated by keeping the allergens under control. Teach the dog to stay off the furniture if that's not done already... Teach said SO to wash their hands if they pet the dog, or teach her not to pet the dog.

I hope you got rid of all the carpet in the house, the drapes and blinds and anything that is cloth (furniture) and sleep on silk sheets only - no linens... don't use fabric softener, have to clean the house with vinegar and newspaper only, mop the tile/hardwood floors every day and have 4 hepa room filters going constantly and keep the house closed up as tight as possible.

If she needs things to THAT extreme, then I'd sympathize... otherwise, I just can't.... and trust me, I've been married to someone who was allergic to all but 8 things in a 392 item allergen test...

If she isn't eating it you better include oven mitts and some duct tape for when that runs out.
