: CLSB Bird Hunt..Who's interested?

2weelpilot

Im going to be putting together a bird hunt at a game preserve somewhere in N. IL, hopefully in October sometime.

Who would be interested it getting in on this? It would be probably pheasent, chukar maybe quail. Ill have to look into that part of it.

This will probably be hunting over dogs so if youve never done that before-that becomes a major concern (DONT SHOOT THE DOGS IN YOUR EXCITEMENT OF A BIRD FLUSHING AT YOUR FEET).

This isnt an outing to just go BLAST some stuff. Lets do that at the Buffalo Range.

Serious inquiries only.

Who's interested?

1>Mike-2weelfool
2>Ken-Odysseys
3>Kelly-Labdog
4>Rick-RickC1957
5>Tony-GsxrTony
6?

i am, and i as you know have excellent control ;)

it doesnt matter what we hunt, it should be a fun gathering, and PLEASE everyone that goes, have your F.O.I.D. card on you as well, as what ever hunting licenses we need. mike also check into that where ever it is to obtain them.

thanks, we packing orange vest too?

Good point on the FOID card Ken.

IL hunting license normally not needed on private game preserves.

Orange vest a definate yes. I have a few so dont go out and buy one right away.

i already have one i could use, and yeah, anyone who hunts knows these things, but i figure tell the new hunters....also too you new hunters know you have to drink some blood of your first kill right? and no i am not kidding.

but thats up to you if ya want too.

as far as the meat, we can all get together and field dress our stuff too so you guys can do your own but watch how to do it ;)

Mike you know i'm in!!! Yes bring your FOID card! May not need it on the hunt but you WILL need it if transporting! New hunters- Bring a pair of latex gloves, pocket knife (sharp), a pouch, and if you have new dog to hunt have a bell on his collar.

Gloves- bird cleaning if your squemish (girly girl)
Pocket knife- Uhh obvious
Pouch- to carry the bird if you do not have a pheasant jacket
Bell- Uhh Obvious:laughing
wet wipes-to either wash the hands or face from the blood

I guess I shouldve put that in my original post. If you have a bird dog let me know. Less dogs/handlers from the farm, lower the cost.

Kelly, you bringing yours? You have setters right?:laughing

I'd like to go but need more details about time. Also I wont be bringing a long gun either. Never hunted with dogs and dont eat either animal. So no need to shoot it. I really just want to watch how hunting with the dogs works. So if this doesnt bug anyone and the timing works out I'd love to go.

Typically you need to be a hunter with gun and card on a (KEY WORD) state run facillity. Now if Mike knows a spot which is private then that should not be a problem. I think you would enjoy it and it would be great to have ya along!

Odysseys

tiss tiss kelly 9 and on the tenth throw one of the top 5

on the 10th, throw a top, now you've done 1000 yards
and repeat every hundred, till the next 1000 yards and throw the 2nd and so on and on so on.

i think your just rusty ;)

This will definately be a game farm (pay to shoot). I dont have the time to go and scout a public area. I also want to be gauranteed to find birds. You tell them how many birds you want released. Usually a 4 bird minimum per person. I cant see the 3 or so of us walking public acreage. The state run places are crap for the most part anyways. Theyre still pen raised birds.

and as far as cleaning birds, over 1/2 of the places actually give you birds that have been cleaned and frozen already (usually your choice) Its a nice option if youre going to eat them because they wont have pellets in them.

Stay tuned..

Mike,

I'm interested, I can probably get a few guys I shoot sporting clays with interested too. I would highly recommend that everyone be properly licensed, it supports game management and most clubs that I hunt with require you to have one. Also, if on the way home you get stopped, it's tricky explaining to the officier, about game birds and guns and no license;) Everyone should have orange vests on, and if anyone cracks a beer open in the field, I'm gone. Can you tell I've been on group hunts that have gone sour:( The only time I can't make the hunt is Oct 10, 11 and 12 I have a trade show. Be great getting together with you, Kelly and Ken (which dog face goes all the way to Woodfield and never stops by my shop to introduce his sorry ass:rofl )

you dont need permits and licenses on private game preserves/farms.

Youre never screwed, theyre always willing to take your money. Long after the IL season closes. Most preserves are open until March

OK I finally heard back from a couple of places. The one that looks the most promising is www.gehrigfarms.com . Its just out side Janesville WI so its probably less than 90 minutes from the Barrington area.

Basically you can let me know how many birds you want released for you and Ill take care of the rest. When you go to the site click on pheasant hunts for the costs.

If there is anyone else that wants to get in on this now is the time to speak up.

Your thoughts?

Lets get this booked:cheers

Can you screw in different choke tubes in an 870?

What barrel length are you looking at? Id go with a 26" if you can find it. Check out Gander Mnt. on Randall Rd. in Geneva if youre having a hard time.

Looks like a winner to me Tony. I love synthetic guns- Indestructable. Like I mentioned.. get the 26" barrell in my opinion. It will swing that much faster. It used to be that the longer barrels were desireable for better patterning but with todays screw in choke tubes you can get the same performance from a 24" barrell as a 28" barrell.

Cleaning....Stick your knife in next to his ass push and circle cut a bit. Slit left to right, reach in and rip out the guts. Careful not to break the sac. Thats it. either leave the entrails on the ground for coyotes or cover em in dirt.

One of my buddies took me to a place just south of gartner,IL.
If I remember correctly, it was 75.00 per person. (15.00 per bird(5birds per person))
He hunts frequently, and he spent a gazillion dollars to train a dog. If I can get him to go too, we will not have to worry about that.

I put in a call to him, he said he would get back to me by friday with more complete info.

Ok I have a little more info to work with..

Unfortunately, it looks like we're going to have to spend a little more money if we're still going to do this.

The most economical is probably the place Brian mentioned in Gardner.

$110 per gun
includes 4 pheasants

$50 for a dog and handler for up to 5 guys ($10 each)
$7.50 for IL Hunting License

He has December 13th afternoon open.

Is this too much money for anyone?

OK I found a better deal for us if we want to wait until December 20th or 21st ! ! !

$75 per gun which includes 4 birds
$30 per person for a dog if we need it.
You will need a $7.50 IL general hunting license
No habitat stamp is required

I may have my pup *somewhat* up to speed by then(cautiously optimistic).

Bird cleaning : $3 per bird
1 pm start

This special hunt rate will fill up fast according to the guy I spoke to. Normal rate is $110 per gun

We REALLY need to get this buttoned up soon. If I dont get your responses Im just going to book it and if you guys cant make it Ill find other guys. This is too good to pass up.

The place is about 20 mins South of Kankakee. Tony. you head down 55 all the time, youve probably seen the exit signs for Odell. Thats where it is.

are all 4 of us still on track? no problems that have crept up?

Do we all have an orange vest and hat ? I have several of each however only one of my vests has a game pocket.

Also, Im leaving for a week tomorrow morning....
Can someone call the IL Dept of Natural Resources and find out if we need a HABITAT STAMP to hunt on a IL Licensed Game farm? Make sure they kmnow that its a state licensed facility. Im getting conflicting reports on whether we need the stamp or not. Iys $5.50 if we do.

Make sure you do have your IL general hunting license.

I had the same question, do we need the Habitat Stamp? I know you need it to hunt public lands, but I'm not sure if you need on a private game farm. I usually buy the stamp regardless, but the local place has run out. And I also recommend the same shells as Mike did, #6, high brass. I have to go thru my hunting foot locker, drag out my vest and hat.

Hey Mike do you still have the extra vest with the bird pocket?

If so can i borrow it for the hunt? My bro-in-law has mine and went on vacation/business and i forgot to get it back. Nice time to go to Hawaii! My fault i should of been on top of it.

If not its no biggy............I CAN"T WAIT!!!! Bring on the game!

By the way i am unsure on the stamp but i already have one just in case.:thumbsup

Kelly, sorry I havent responded to your question. Ive been in Disney for a week or so.

I have 2 extra vests but they do not have the game pouch in the back. Im hopeful that we have 16 birds to carry so we'll need to figure something out.

I guess Ill just go buy my habitat stamp just to be safe.

Question for you guys.... Does anyone care if my 9 year old walks with us? Hes been on a couple of bird hunts with me and wont get in the way. Maybe I just found our sulotion to carrying birds ! :p

We need to pick a meeting time on Saturday morning. I think my house would be easiest for you guys.

I-55 south to Weber Rd. Go south on Weber back over 55 to the City gas station and turn right on Normantown Rd. Take that all the way to the end and it'll curve left. After the curve take your 2nd left on to Knollwood Dr. Follow Knollwood all the way around, it'll curve to the left and it will dead end in my driveway in Knollwood Ct. - 21705 Knollwood Ct. Its a 2 story blue house. If anyone needs my cell phone # let me know.

Ill have to figure out a time to meet .

Now for the pisser....I have my license, but any place I have tried here is out of habitat stamps:grrrr If you find a place that has them, let me know, or better yet, get me one too, I'll give you the $$ Saturday along with the adult beverage of your choice;)

At long last I have my habitat stamp. Also went to Gaylans', they had a great sale on blaze orange stuff 40 to 50 off. I got a Columbia Upland Bird vest for 35, it was regular 69.99. So I'm retiring my old hand me down from Dad, I think he bought it in 1957:laughing I also bought another box of shells, the box I had, had been in the truck since 1994, the brass was kinda of green:rolleyes I also found a small tackle box, a fishing reel, a knife, a whole bunch of tools, and 3 arrows, maybe I should have sold the truck sooner.

Mike...if you picked up a stamp for me, I'll still take it. I'll make a small matt for it frame it and istant x-mas gift for my Dad.

What time are we meeting on Saturday?

I did not get you a stamp yet so youre good to go.:cheers

OK heres the deal guys. Its always something. I just got off the phone with the owner of the farm. Hes got pnuemonia so he cant work his dog for us.

We'll be hunting primarily harvested soybean fields with standing sorgum crops every so often. What he does is put out the birds in the sorgum strips, the hunters usually walk the outside edges of the strips and the dog will work the downwind side of the cover and when the dog picks up a bird scent they bust in after them. ( ideally). The strips are about 15 yards wide I think he said so its not wide and the edges are harvested soybean fields so its easy walking. The total area is about 80-100 acres. Its supposed to be cold so the birds should flush faster than if it was warm or rainy.

Whats your thoughts? Use my dog and hope we can walk to get the birds up? It would save a bit of $$ if we do- or use a friend of the owners who uses pointers to make sure we find birds ans spend a little more $$.

Kelly, I covered how I feel about this. Although Im not sure I know what I want to do. Can we find 16 birds in 3 hours? Id like to think so since its fairly low cover.

a penny for your thoughts:rolleyes

2weelpilot
12-10-2003, 02:56 PM
and the strips are about 2 miles long so bring your comfy boots:D although I hope he keeps the birds in the 100 acres for us. Id hate to get in shape because of this:D

I am up for the group. Either way count me in with a group decision. $110 per gun correct?

2weelpilot
12-10-2003, 03:05 PM
well thats a generic answer if I ever saw one.
:laughing

Its $100 without the dog/handler and $120 with the new dog/handler. The new guy is a bit more I guess:rolleyes

Rick ? Tony?

Mike I'm easy. If you want to use your dog, that's cool. Another 20 or 30 dollars isn't going to hurt me. So whatever the group decides is good for me. I say we use your dog, we have 3 hours, if these are raised birds, they won't go very far from the release point. They usually release them about an hour before the group shows.

RickC1957
12-10-2003, 05:16 PM
Mike,

Just had a great thought. Forget your dog, we use Tony as our "dog", he's new to this shooting and hunting, isn't he? We tell them to walk in the strips and thrash around with the butt of his gun:jester I think the training collar I have will fit him too:jester This way we save money, Tony thinks he's hunting, you , Kelly and I get the roosters.:laughing

Alright:D This will be great:D The wife is annoyed that I would rather hunt pheasant with da boys, than spend the day X-mas shopping with her.....what a silly woman:laughing

I'm hoping it will be cold and clear. That way the birds will want to sun themselves, the only problem with the cold, will be Tony's constant whining and teeth chattering will be distracting:jester
