I have a Trek hybrid bike. The pedals I have now are platform pedals that light up when they spin. I like this feature because I do alot of night riding. The grip on these have worn out and my feet slip alot. Without spending a ton of money are there any good options for replacement? particularly grip that is metal instead of the rubber stuff that wore out on me?

Any BMX style platform pedal will do. Most have replacable pins that provide traction.

Ahhhhh, but do they light up when you pedal them????:jester
Crazy, a BMX platform pedal will probably be your best bet unless you replace with OEM from the dealer.

haters:lmao: :lmao: make fun if you will but there have been lots of people injured or killed lately on bicycles. Since I mostly ride at night I'll risk being a dork so people can see me.

I ride home sometimes at night and I will be waiting at a stoplight when a car will just about run me over turning right and not even see me sitting there. People are clueless. I have a taillight I am putting on next week to help out with that seeing as I ride more often now. Maybe I will get the light up pedals and a glow-in-the-dark propeller for my helmet too. :lmao:

I guess it's worth a try. Sizes run differently sometimes. Let me know if you find them. I'll stop by

ive youre handy enough you could drill into the plastic of the pedals and install a bunch of 1/8" setscrews so that they stick up from teh pedal surface a bit, they give almost endless bit into shoes, or shins for that matter. but your feet wont slip.
I ride with a set of shimano spd pedals(clipless) and it feels weird riding on an open platform now

That's actually what my Azonic downhill pedals have. When they dull or fall out you just replace them with set screws. Nice setup.

they take getting used to, make sure to set the tension for the relase as low as you can when you first start riding with em. I had my SPD's set 1 click up and couldnt get off the pedals when i was starting out, damn near seent me to the hospital cause I couldnt get the feet off in time when a track stand when bad i ended up tipping over and cracked a helmet on a concrete railing. walked away with nothing worse than a minor headache and bruised ego.

I was super drunk on Saturday, rode my bike to a few bars with some friends, ended up at a pretty sweet loft party. I rode home on SPD pedals, forgot to take my feet out at one point and fell over a short fence. I was too drunk to feel anything, but there was some carnage. SPDs can bite ya.

These SPDs sound kinda cool. Are they just for road bikes?
The toe cage pedals on my Jamis hardtail are a bit of a PITA.

nope, the SPD's are more of a general use/ offroad type than a road use the road specific pedals are far lighter built. the spds hold up amazingly well, ive had mine for at least 6 years thru all sorts of mud, water adn winter adn all theyve needed was an occasional spray of lube

Good to know.
Methinks the Mtn. bike will be getting some upgrades soon....

Yes there are a lot of products out there for this purpose. I use Crank Brothers for all my bikes except road which use Look. The Shimanos are a staple in the pedaling world as are the Crank Brothers. A lot of your decision will involve budget and weight, which is what most of the biking stuff differs on. You can rule out the expensive stuff right off the bat, which is mainly for racing. I can get you a set of Shimano clipless pedals for about $35 and a set of CB for about $40, so they are not that expensive. I can tell you the Crank Brothers pedals will shed mud much more easily than the Shimanos will if that matters.

woah!!!! seriously? Do the c/b's have a cage around them so you can use them on the other side without shoes?

4 sided entry versus the Shimano 2 sides. On the start of a MTB race I can usually just slam my foot into the pedal and it will slide in while the Shimano guys are dicking around with theirs looking down.

I'm thinking of going with the CB egg beaters. I heard the cleats wear out super fast, any truth to that?
What about pedals like the candy or mallet, have any experience with those?

Just saw this now. Not sure on wear rate of the cleats because I only use CB for all my off-road bikes and I don't have any other experience to compare them to, but I use mine pretty regularly and usually change them every year just for kicks. No opinions on the other choices by CB but my buddy has the candys and he seems to like them. I think whatever you go with by them will be good.

Just got a set of CB Candy SL pedals to replace the toe cages on my bike.
Holy freakin cow, what a difference. It was alot easier to get in and out tha I thought it would be, and the pedaling efficiency is SIGNIFICANTLY better. Its night and day! I wish I'd have gotten these sooner!!

I should have about that much pretty soon and will give a full report. Especially now, since I can do 103mph with the new pedals, GPS verified. :lmao:

Yeah pedals make a big difference, especially if you are coming from those stupid cages. Really they all make a quality product from CB to Speedplay to Shimano, it's just the features you are deciding on.

Yeah they are great and very popular. I can tell you that you should grease them as often as you can. If you ride in wet or muddy conditions a lot you need to take off the endcap and throw some grease in there. They dry out quickly and death is imminent soon after.
