My motor. We bought it from an SV builder. Worked fine for thousands of track miles... of course, we never noticed this "ISSUE"

LOL!

Oh well, this is probably the reason it needs to be rebuilt. Certainly didn't help any!

If you can find an oil cooler use it. It's a nice little add on for the SV motor. The 1st gen actually has the spots where if you want to you could tap into. The 2nd gen uses the oil cooler. All models have the spots in the cases.

Stupid question, but never seen someone safety wire their oil filter like that, is that acceptable? Doesn't look like it to me, but I'm just guessing.

its perfectly fine to wire your filter that way
not ideal but things seldom are, the wire only needs to prevent the filter from coming loose after its properly installed, it doesnt pull it tight or keep it on, merely insurance

Wrap a big hose clamp around the filter, snug it down, tie the safety wire to the hose clamp and to a stationary point.

Do you think the filter is going to unscrew itself?

That would not pass tech when I was racing. The clamp should be flipped the other way, and the safety wire should be pulling across the top to keep it snug should the filter come loose.

+1. But it seem like people at tech don't know what to look for anymore.

True, the safety wire should alwyas be pulling the nut, bolt or whatever you are tieing off tight. Not necessarilly righty tighty because some things are reversed threaded.

But honestly... Lets be real. Is the filter really going to unscrew itself. Even if the filter exploded the safety wire and hose clamp isn't going to do anything. The oil is still going everywhere. All over the motorcycle, you and the race track.

Impossible. Houdini oil filters are banned from racetracks. All the other ones should be fine.
