Race bike for 2014

So I made the decision to part out my Yamaha and race the Aprilia SXV next year. Couple of reasons behind this but I am excited to see what this bad boy can do.

Pic of the YZ450 and the SXV 550

Pic of the SXV when I first bought it

The bike was derestricted and remapped with black plastics put on and aftermarket decals by Drippinwet. Also had Fat bars installed along with aftermarket ebay mirrors.

This is how it sits now. I have added forged 17 inch marchesini rims

http://www.motostrano.com/Marchesini...s-p/kit-sa.htm

I took the Aprilia on a motard track once and it handled like a truck compared to my YZ 450 so i knew I had some work to do to it. The Aprilia puts down a ton of HP bone stock as is so I am not worried about building up the engine. We will get to that in a bit.

So I decided to hunt down suspension stuff. Well it is nearly impossible to find and Ohlins rear shock for this bike as they where only special order for a short time for certain race teams a select others. Well after searching the whole world literally via the internet I found one in the UK. I talked to Dave at F.B.I. (Fast Bike Industries) and he told me when these things came out that that were $2500 and impossible to get so he told me to snatch it up.

As soon as I get it it will be sent to FBI for a refresh before I toss it on.

Well that takes care of the rear now to the front. I will be taking off the forks and sending them to FBI also for springs and a revalve. I also just bought a set of XTRIG triple clamps. As anyone who races supermoto knows the stock triples are not very good for sumo racing.

http://www.xtrig.com/en/Products/Triple-Clamp.html

For teh brakes I am using the set up off of my YZ 450. Brembo caliper and brembo master. I love this set up and with the Breaking rotor itís a win win situation there.

Now for the engine I just bought a Suter Slipper.

http://www.motostrano.com/Suter-Slip.../004-20002.htm

I heard alot of good things about them so that will get tossed in the engine when I send it to Allan Noland.

Allan who has his own shop on the East coast Noland Trans-World Cycle is 1 of 2 gurus that knows the ins and out of the Aprilia SXV here in the US. He has worked on and built over 200 of these bikes and made them bullet proof and run like raped Apes. Pun intended He is refreshing my engine as it has about 6500 miles on it and at around 6K miles is the time to crack it open and make sure everything is good before it blows. He is gonna do a complete tear down of the engine. I will yank the engine out probably within the next couple of weeks to ship it over to him with the slipper clutch for him to install.

For the exhaust I bought a Silmoto. I like to keep the under seat exhaust like the stock one is so that way if I do crash it I do not have to worry about crash damage from a canister that is stick out the side/sides. Here is a video clip of the exhaust. It makes the bike sound like a mutha f'ing BEAST.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDhFkGfyI0A

So far thatís it and honestly all I can afford right now as I am shopping for a new pick up so I cannot go to much more crazy on this bike. This year I will finally be doing one of the races on my bucket list. I will be sending in the $700 entry fee this weekend. Pike Peak Internation Hill Climb.

Can't wait to see how it turns out. Other than the entry fee - do you have to do anything special to run Pikes? (like qualify etc)

Very cool stuff, and can't wait to see how it looks after modified.

Steve,

Did you get a weight on the bike before you started tearing into it? I'm curious how much you will be pulling off just by getting rid of all the street stuff.

Let me know when you ave an issue with finding Ape Parts - King Karl from SMJ is an Alpina Dealer for the UK but has an "in" with a Fact Ape Team and might be able to help you hunt stuff down - He is a SUPER cool cat - Just need to keep a lot of the stuff off Forums so he does not get into trouble if you know what I mean

Colin I did not rip it apart yet but I will weigh it with a full tank of gas and all the fluids befoe I do. Thanks for reminding me to do that. Matter of fact I will weigh the old and new rims and see if that saves any weight. My guess is probably not but a nice thing is they are tubless and also the stock ones bend like butter.

I will make sure I take pics of the whole process.

FOREWARD
The PPIHC is the second oldest auto race in the United States (second only to the Indy 500), originated in 1916.
The PPIHC is a speed contest for motorized vehicles that runs one vehicle at a time against the clock. The traditional starting line is Mile Post 7 at an altitude of 9,400 feet. The finish line, 12.42 miles away at the summit, is 14,110 feet altitude for a vertical rise of almost 5,000 feet. There are 156 separate curves, a maximum ascent of 10% and a minimum descent of 3% on the course. The 12.42 mile course surface is well–maintained asphalt.
The race is a traditional spectator event. Many return year after year to the same viewing area. The most popular area is Devil's Playground at the 16 Mile Post, which is above timberline and offers a maximum view of the course. There are several other popular spectator areas below timberline such as Nine Mile, Halfway Picnic Ground, Ski Area, and Glen Cove.
The highway is leased by the PPAHCEM from the City of Colorado Springs and operates under a special use permit from the United States Forest Service.

I assume you have spoken with Chase on this? - He did it last year on a Kawi 450 and might have some good insight

Yeah he is on the Aprilia forum that I frequent. I haven't asked him for anything yet as I like to dig for things myself. If I get stuck on something I will ask him. he is pretty big helper on the Aprilia/AF1 sxv section

Again this is another reason you need to get on FB.

I talked to Chase last year about this and all though the year this year. On one of my FB threads I had on my page I talked about the race and me, Chase and Sweeney where posting back and forth about it. Sweeney has done is a bunch of times and is going to send in his fee soon as he is recouping from the bills from the trip to Europe racing last month. Chase wants to go and posted on his was the video of racing it a couple of years ago. His quote was " damn steve all this take about Pike Peak makes me want to watch my you tube vid. His wifes response and I quote......I don't want to hear any more about that damn mountain! " I just looked right now and he deleted her comment

Yeah we are looking to rent a house out there and spliting the costs. I already have a mechanic/pit worker hired which is Stanimal. He is the driver and the go to guy that will be helping me in the pits as it is mandatory to have at least 1 person with you. Also Julia is goin with us to help out and watch. Hooliagan and Germany also expressed intrest in flying out and watching. Right now I am looing for a sponsor that will supply me with a sprinter van or a extended van to bring all my stuff out there as I don't want to have it just in a pick up. But I have 8 months to come up with that.

Sent my engine out last week to get a complete teardown and refresh. Allen Noland is doing the work and he is from the east coast. His shop deals mainly with Aprilia SXV/RXV's

https://www.facebook.com/#!/NolandTransWorldCycle

Here is his FB page and yesterday he started to tear into the engine. He posted some pics of the process so far.

https://www.facebook.com/#!/media/se...5443111&type=1

For those who don't use facebook here are the pics

Cams look good according to Allen so that is a good sign.

Rear cylinder about the same as the front. The cleaner spots at 6 and 12 o'clock are where the rings didn't seat. Been burning a little oil.

I am guessing he will have this bad boy ripped apart by the end of the day today and let me know what needs to be replaced. I know obviously all gaskets and rings.

I also bought a new frame for my bike and dropped that off along with the subframe and some other small parts to get powder coated by a friend and fellow racer up in Milwaukee last night right as it started to snow. Parts should be ready within a week or 2.

You do know that Ryan just takes a Black Sharpie to your shit and then coats it with Alberto VO5 Hot Oil Treatment and corresponding hair spray, right?
