Movie Rentals thru PS store

Movie rentals are now unlocked thru the PS store. From what I hear you can rent or buy SD and rent HD. And it's also a progressive download so it starts about one minute after you rent the movie. I think I'm going to give this a shot this weekend.

Does anyone know the rules for Rental vs. Purchase? I'd imagine purchasing means you get to store the file on your PS3 forever but how long do you get access to the rental? Can you pause and rewind and such?

I was trolling around last night and thought about 91 mins of Rambo but I didn't have the time to watch it.

Anyone try it yet?

Selection is not that great and some movies not available in HD. I believe you have 24 hour "rental" period on movies.

Rental = $4 for SD and $6 for HD. I'm thinking that I won't use it unless my Netflix get lost in the mail or Netflix ships a film that my wife chose.

I might be more inclined to rent if they offered a subscription service for $6/month. I, myself, would surely spend at least $6/m that way. Otherwise I might just do it once or twice a year.

FYI this was in response to Live releasing the same process only through netflix. I think Sony will ramp it up a bit more in the coming months to help make up for the fact that Netflix is avail over Live now.

We'll see how things pan out but if microsoft isn't holding exlusivity over netflix we could probably see it coming to the psn soon.

Everything I read says MS+Netflix=exclusive distribution rights. Sony's ace could be the HD BluRay content deals its inked in the past 2 or 3 years.

Basically, with Netflix you get a really crappy copy. Netflix Now or whatever they call it is what you get over Live and that might be OK for viewing older movies or TV shows but its about the same video quality that you'll find on a 10 year old VHS tape.

I'd put money on Sony having made some HD distribution rights in some of its BluRay contracts. They already own a ton of movies just from their own library so it shouldn't be a problem to get a lot of HD content through them.

My question and it's probably easy to answer is if you brick your PS3 and you have to send it in for repairs Sony does not send you that unit back. So I hope that your purchases of movie and game content follow your PSN account and not the hardware or you'll have to purchase the movies again.

I am guessing it will follow the account, like games and stuff.

As for MS+Netflix exclusive, I believe a guys sits on the board of directors of both MS and Netflix, so I wouldn't be surprised if this is a MS exclusive deal, i would be nice if it weren't, caus ei would actually get netflix and drop comcast.

speaking of movie rentals I had my first redbox experience over the weekend and I'm totally sold. Kiss my ass Blockbuster and your crazy rates. Ironically I was waiting for BB to open on saturday morning when I figured what the hell and walked into Jewel next store and sure enough they had what I wanted to rent in stock.

fyi, Doomsday was pretty bad. On the vcook-o-meter of sci-fi I put it way above Ultraviolet but just below Aeon Flux.

red box is cool make sure you check online to see what your local unit has in stock as you dont have to return the movie to the same box you rented from. so its really a revolving inventory.

iv been renting movieings on xbox 360 for some time now. cant wait for netflix to open up this year on the 360.

The lady I worked with last year was a red box junkie. She signed up online for the newsletter or updates or some shit and got a free movie every monday.

I don't ride, I cook!

Redbox is definitely great. I'll grab a movie on my way out of the grocery store if I'm having the girl over or something. So fast and easy it's ridiculous.

chibeemer: All psn purchases are tied to your PSN account. You can even access those from other PS3's so long as you setup a new profile on the ps3 itself so all of your purchases are available. It's an easy way to share anything you purchase with friends actually.
