PS3 Won't read discs

Just wondering if anyone has had this problem? I ended up calling Sony and am sending in my console for repair. Looks like there may be a problem with the blu ray diode or something like that.

Basically the problem is that no matter which disc I put in the console won't read it.

Nope but it happened to my PS2 and several of my friends.

It happens. A lot of talk about a dirty lens. Make sure you dust around your PS3 periodically and before you insert disks wipe them clean. Netflix disks are sometimes very dirty and that dust will most likely end up on your lens.

Cigarette smoke, pet hair and storing your PS3 near the floor certainly don't help either.

It appears it's also a possible common lens failure issue possibly due to overheating. Early BD lenses were prone to failure and these are being replaced now. Some say it's a design flaw that the overheating affects the lens assembly so easily but no one has filed a lawsuit that's established this as fact yet. Nothing near 360 failures though.

Some people are replacing their failed lenses (and lens assembly) with $50 replacements but IMO it might be easier to just send it to Sony like you did.

What I'm reading about prevention is low dust environment described above and making sure the PS3 is stored in a open air area and not in an enclosed cabinet or on top of a hot reciever. Sometimes that isn't that easy to find though.

On a side note, remember to back up your game data periodically in case this happens. You can plug a common USB thumb drive into the front of your PS3 and then nav to the game save location on the XMB and Triangle copy to the USB drive. I'd hate to loose my game progress as I'm perpetually involved in 3+ games in various stages of completion.

Well you already sent it in so a solution is "in the mail." In the future check out the US PS3 forum for some quick fixes. It's helped me in the past:
