The fan on my PS3 is on a lot and its loud

Is that normal?

even when just watching the movie...

i used to have it on the whole time, (in that stand by mode), but it's loud and the fan is running almost the whole time.

now i just turn it on when i'm using it.

how often do you hear the fan run on yours?

thanks,

t.

Might want to check that the air intake port is not clogged with debris.

it's been doing this for over a year, so um, no. it hasn't gone out yet.

i'm just wondering how often do you hear your fan.

The PS3 has the power supply in the housing so there is a lot of heat in there. So it's usually on and on the lower speed. When it gets super hot the fan hits high speed and gets loud. My brother in law had a release PS3 that over time started to always run in High speed. He plays every day so his went out shortly after.

Usage is the main factor here and heat is of course the electronic killer.

my ps3 is only used for movie so it doesn't hit high speed unless something is blocking the fan, like the cat.

it should not be going on high that much.

Perhaps you need to move it to a location with more ventilation other then that you can get a exterior fan which only delays the motherboard killing overheat.

do you use it a lot?

and is it a original release PS3?

hm, maybe i'll just open it and try to get it really clean. or use the compressor

what do u consider original release?

i think it's about 2 years old now. 40 or 60 gb, don't even remember.

i barely ever use it in summer, but i play in winter.

if you have the media card reader and four USB ports on the front it's a original release PS3 which had more problems with overheating.

I wouldn't recommend using a compressor to clean electronics. there is almost always water in the air that comes out of a compressor.

If you're past warranty feel free to crack that puppy open to clean it. Sony isn't known for performing free service past the warranty so it doesn't matter if you break the void stickers.

+1.
Move to a place with better air circulation if you have it in an enclosed or partially enclosed cabinet.
With the recent cooler temps, I have not noticed my fan go to high much, however, over the summer when I didn't have the A/C blasting, the fan would go to high frequently.
