How to xfer data from one PS3 to another PS3?

Hey Firebretha... maybe you can help with this...

If I were to purchase the PS3 120gb slim and I wanted to transfer all my shit over to the 120gb... how do I do this so that the 120gb will act exactly the same as my old system.

Thanks.

Portable HD plugged into the USB on the PS3. You might need to format the drive. Or you could just use a mini-flash drive. My 128mb thumb drive is my game save backup and I have hundreds of files backed up there. That drive is always plugged into my PS3. In this case if my PS3 fails I'd have my game saves but I'd need to download all my DLC and reinstall games to my PS3 HD. Not that big of a deal since I probably won't ever need to reinstall old games or redownload all the DLC for games I finished.

The main reason why I'd use the portable drive to copy data is for movies I've bought or CORE issues I have. Downloading these again would take a lot of time.

Here is the easiest way to do it

PS3 3.15 System Software Update
Posted by Eric Lempel // Director, PlayStation Network Operations
Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) will receive its next system software update shortly – v. 3.15. This is an optional update, and it enables existing PS3 owners who purchase a new PS3 system (perhaps as a second unit for the household) to transfer their content from their current PS3 to the new system. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3 system. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.

Here’s a quick primer on how the Data Transfer Utility works (UPDATED).

Data Transfer Utility

Connect both PS3 (A) and PS3 (B) with a LAN cable and connect both PS3 to the TV (using different video input connectors). (Please note, do not unplug any cables when the PS3 power is on.) Turn both the current PS3 (A) and new PS3 (B) on. Please note, firmware (v3.15) must be installed on both systems.
On the XMB of PS3 (A), scroll to the Settings category and select [System Settings] and then [Data Transfer Utility]
Follow the instructions on-screen and select [1. Transfer data from this system to the other PS3 system.]
When PS3 (A) is in standby and ready for transferring data, switch the screen to PS3 (B), scroll to the Settings category on XMB and select [System Settings] and then [Data Transfer Utility]
Follow the instructions on-screen and select [2. Transfer from the other PS3 system to this system.]
After transferring the data, follow the instructions on-screen.
If content that was downloaded from PlayStation Store was transferred as part of this operation, you must activate PS3 (B) before you can use the data. Log in to the PS3 system as the user who owns the content, and then select (PlayStation Network) > (Account Management) > (System Activation) to activate the system.
More details on Data Transfer Utility will be available here once the firmware update is live.

“minis”

The 3.15 update also enables “minis” to be played on a PS3 system. As we’ve reported here before, “minis” launched on PlayStation Network this fall in conjunction with the launch of PSPgo. These bite-sized games offer a more casual experience and are ideal for shorter gameplay sessions. Now PS3 owners will be able to play “minis,” and those who own both a PS3 and PSP system will be able to play on either platform. “minis” for the PS3 system will be available for download on PlayStation Store in the coming weeks. If you’ve purchased any “minis” already for your PSP and the title becomes available for PS3, you’ll simply need to download the title to your PS3.

I just want to clarify that doing this data transfer will make the 'new' PS3 function exactly the same as my old PS3 in terms of User Logins... PSN... software related things.

Thanks again for you help.

Next... I will be getting a salt water system... you can help me w/ that too when the time comes. *please...

New 120gb and 250gb do NOT have "other OS" capabilities,

I have not tried the data transfer myself so I cannot attest to all of its capabilities, if you ahve a thumbdrive, external harddrive I would recommend doing a back up to it regardless to help just in case it does not work the same the back up will help.

in theory it will. LOL

I don't know how I missed this. The update just came out on Tuesday and I read all about it last week.

Anyway, I was just reading my Playstation: The Official Magazine Jan issue and someone wrote in about HD swapping. They said that movies you purchased via PSN have digital copyright tags on them which allow them to only play on the hard drive they were originally downloaded to. This person was backing up a 60gb drive to portable and then copying the backup to a 500gb drive replacing their old 60gb. They couldn't play some of their videos. Not all but some.

Is that only known issue for not being able to transfer/access content?

I buy all my movies on blu-ray anyways so this is a non-issue if it is only for downloaded video.

Either way... I hope it's not too much of a pain in the ass when the time comes for me to upgrade.

firebreatha - Any talks on another 'slimmer' iteration of the PS3?

I don't think you'll have video trouble if nothing is downloaded. I downloaded some episodes of Battlestar Galactica's last season that would probably have trouble but I deleted them after I watched. I suppose I should have rented them but they were only $3 each in SD. My internet connection is too slow to download HD files. I'd end up waiting years. Yet another reason to move out of the city.

neg, the new PS3 is going to be around for quite awhile. redesigning a system is ungodly exspensive.

Yea, movies are a pita because of the copying laws, etc. they only allow for a single download legally and thats it. once its gone its gone.

Any problems with having two PS3s that have the same data?

I plan on having one PS3 upstairs and one downstairs so I can game on the other system when one TV is being used. I need them to have mirrored game saves mainly. Don't download movies or TV from PSN.

Hmmm..... I'm not sure. I have the same setup so that would be tits if there is no issue. I don't think there would be as long as both aren't signed in with same psn. (First psn gets booted offline) but u can have same psn in both systems which game saves are gegistered to.

haha.....

I only plan on being online and signed in on one at a time, so as long as I'm able to save my missions, etc, on one and continue on the other, that's pimp.

Rank and trophies are save online, right?
