Gear Req for STT First Timer - Boots

I am trying to talk an old friend of mine into coming out to his first track day and he is being struck by some of the sticker shock of starting out in this hobby.

New Leathers - Boots - Helmet - tires.. etc etc

He already has some gear - but not track stuff

I was wondering to do STT N are purposebuilt riding boots required or are over the ankle boots ok. He is a Marine so obviously he asked if he can wear combat boots

I told him I thought he could, but I wasn't sure.
Figured this is a good place to check.

I am recommending he pick up one of the closeout Alpinestar SG-1 suits as they are a pretty good value right now + he can use it for the street.

I think he is good on the helmet - I do not believe he has ever been down before.

So would combat or engineer boots pass tech? I just want to be sure of any advice I give him. I would hate for him to show up and not be allowed through.

Perhaps he will pick up boots for his next weekend - I'd just like to get him out there and 'hooked'

purpose built boots are not required however id highly recommend them

combat boots... i dont imagine youd get much of any feel out of them on the pegs/shifter/brake

its possible that he can rent the leather suittrackside as well

Understood.
I am just trying to get him out there the first time or two. After that if he likes it I am sure he will buy the gear and do this willingly. It's a big pill to swallow for a lot of people as I am sure you know.

I mentioned trackside rental but I also told him there were some really good deals out there on gear right now. + after two days of rental he'd be over 25% towards paid off on buying his own suit right? It made sense to me.

I've seen guys in steel toed combat boots with duck tape over the laces, but that was in 96 :P Maybe he could still do it.

From their site:

"Rider Gear Requirements: 1) Damage free BSI, DOT or SNELL full-face helmet with face shield. 2) Riding boots that fully cover the ankle. "

I've seen it too.. Hell not too long ago some orgs were allowing 2 pairs of blue jeans in novice.

I told him I *thought* he could get away with them his first couple days but he'd probably eventually want boots made for it. I hate giving advice and not being sure of what I am telling someone - "Riding boots that fully cover the ankle" could be read as "Riding boots, that fully cover the ankle - ie purpose built riding boots - and not the shorties.

That said I am pretty sure he can get away with it but I was hoping to have one of the people that do tech just give me the official "yep - that's fine"

If your buddy has 9-9.5 boot size, I've got Vendramini riding boots in a very good shape that he can have for free.

Damn.
I'll need to look. Personally I want to help but deals like that are find and snatch up. Me looking for him then sending his way. It'd be gone. There is also the matter of sizing. I'll mention it anyway. I had hoped to get him out there 23/24 but it looks as if N is booked.

In any case he says he has a 50" chest now so that'd put him snugly in a dainese 60 or a vanson 48/50.

If you come across any suits in that range and you don't mind ping me. I'll pass it along. Hopefully I'll get him out there. He keeps talking about wanting to go fast etc. I'd love for him to get out there and ride where the only limits are his own
