POST: May 10th STT Road America

Well I popped my Road America cherry yesterday and all I can say is that track is fast. I spent the morning trying to learn the line and avoid the new patches in 5, 6, and 8 because they kept trying to highside me. Even if you went slow, the rear would step out. Anyway once I kinda figured out the line I wanted to take, I spent the afternoon working on braking into 1, 5, 8, and 12 (Canada Corner?). It was a good learning experience and I can't wait to go back.

On a side note Kevin Schwantz was there riding a Red Bull 125 and the HMC Superduke R race bikes. I got to experience some close passing by him in 7, the carousel, and 13 along with the train of folks trying to chase him down. There were also 3 Red Bull Rookie kids there on 125s that made me feel really old.

Well, I too had a great time. Those super Dukes sounds great, it was also nice to have the a couple Red Bull Cup kids out playing with us.

Dan and I went out an played for many sessions in the day, for which it was a great time. Thanks Dan.

Like Nolan said those patches were hard to disgust. They were very slippery and in the race line for the most part. To avoid then you had to be in the inside of them almost run on the inside curb / paint or run to the outside of them.

As it turns out the strips would eventually put me on my head in turn 6 in the second to last session. Bike did well, just needs small stuff I think, as I did not really look at it to hard. I'm out an RX-7 helmet as I smacked my head good, it rang my bell. Other then being a sore, which is expected, it was fun.

Dan took most of the pictures of his stupid bike, why I'm not sure. If people want the full Kevin Schwantz pictures just PM me your email.

I never made it past turn 5 because of mechanical issues. Too bad STT doesn't have a mechanical credit like NESBA. I was out $225 but I guess that's part of the game.

As a side note, GixxerDan should never be allowed to put gas into a motorcycle unsupervised. Ask him the story.

No. I had an oil pressure light come on that kept me from riding. See my post asking for help on how to fix it.

I had an awesome time as well. I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to coach this weekend. For the morning I rode back to back on I and A in the morning trying to get used to the new sealer patches and the Triumph 675. (not mine, borrowed for day) I really love that track. and now I really love the 675.

does STT have any side track mechanics there or better yet if nick was there?

him and gus have a small repair shop going, nick probably would have been able to see it was a false light i am sure.

Road America was definitely an experience - even as a spectator. I was itching to ride all day, but contented myself with soaking in the atmosphere of a major racetrack. The size of it was staggering after being accustomed to the local 1-2 mile tracks.

It was great having KBlack and lil*jp to hang out with in the pits, watch the action on the track, and talk bikes 'n stuff. I think we've got a couple of new female track riders in the making!

Nice pitting with Glenn, Jon (sorry about your crash, glad you're OK!), Dan (even though you're a doofus and I'll never let you put gas in my bike ), Drama (messy pit mate, still sorry you couldn't even ride at least one whole lap).

Favorite quotes for the day...

GixxerDan: "You didn't just see that, did you?"

Glenn, Jon, Nolan, Dan: "You lead. No YOU lead. NO, YOU LEAD! OK, fine. I'll lead..."

Great day! I got to pass Schwantz on the straight with my 600. He was on a 125. Of course, He passed right by on turn one. He didn't even brake! I almost went off the track while watching his line. He did the same thing on a superduke the next session. I wish I had a helmet cam.

GixxerDan was very fast. He had some top secret gas additive.

Usually Ken from Superbike Italia is trackside support for STT days. Just look for a red sprinter van.

HDTony.... Damn glad to meet you!

I told you it's a bad idea to follow a slower guy. It happened so fast, you were standing already when I looked back. But seriously, thanks for not taking me with you. I was a little nervous out there since I haven't track ridden for 2 yrs.

Good Times! I had a lot of fun hanging out with all of you. It was nice to meet you Kim and Nolan. Thanks for coming with Kelly. It is amazing how much you can learn from just watching.

Riding 2up at lunch was AWESOME! Thanks Glenn. I think I might have the itch to do a track day or two!!
