I was there and it only passed out of committe, now it goes to the senate. It is not a law and we will stop it. Some very good arguements in springfield yesterday, I was there with 100 other members. We are currently 41 - 0 since 1983 with all the helmet law bull, one senator even made the statement "Insurance rates will never go down, they will always continue to go up" For those of you that were counting on them being lowered, it was recorded as such in committe chambers and documented. They also tried to say that this law would help balance the budget???? WTF are they thinking??? Also they can and will cut out cycle rider training and the money from our renewals would start being spent on useless crap. They further implied that motorcyclist were incapable of making decisions for themselves. <-----------ALL FACTUAL I WAS THERE.

I wonder where they got the idea that having a helmet law reduces the need for rider training.

No problem, we are having a meeting and the info is below.

The Chicago Chapter will hold an EMERCENCY LEGISLATIVE MEETING Tuesday March 10, 2009 at Sidekicks 4424 W. Montrose Ave. in Chicago after the Chicago HOG meeting. Start time is going to be about 8:00pm and you don't have to miss dinner as they have great food and drinks. At this meeting we will discuss the bill listed below. Dan Harper will have all the info for us with phone numbers of our State Reps & Senators, BRING YOUR CELL PHONES AND CALL RIGHT THEN. I will have a few phones to be used for making calls that night also. This is VERY IMPORTANT, your freedom is at stake here. Also if anyone is in Sen. Heather Steans district I urge you to call her and tell her that she misrepresented her district by making the statement "All the riders in my district want a helmet law"

Patrick J. Jones
President
CHICAGO A.B.A.T.E.

Also a big thank you to Chicago HOG for allowing us to bring this to their membership.

SB1351
Synopsis As Introduced

This is how poorly worded and vague it is,

The really really sad truth is that it often costs less when a rider dies than when he survives ...

Medical bills are expensive... My leg cost upwards of 300k$
Most people don't carry that much in life insurance, and even if they did.. That comes out of a different bucket.

I am a very strong supporter of people wearing helmets.
I do not want there to be a law.. but I feel it is my personal responsibility to tell almost everyone I meet that doesn't wear one why they should (i would be dead more than likely more than once if not for a helmet) -- I have also given a few of my old ones away to friends and friends of friends for free on the promise that they would wear them...

It is crazy that we're having this debate. I understand all the "freedom of choice" rhetoric but we're talking about lives here, I can't believe that we are still refusing a helmet law

Next thing we should lobby for is graduated licensing like they have in Europe.

How can this be right? How can people who do not ride motorcycles tell those who do what to wear and what not to wear?

Not gonna happen and it's not on for a vote, I had a very productive meeting with Sen. Heather steans yesterday morning and she's not all that bad. Got to work on her some, I also brought along a few of the ladies from the Windy city Women riders and they talked with her also. We'll see and I will keep you all updated.
