Making the most of the Wii

We got a Wii for Christmas, and it's something we've always talked about getting but never bothered with because we aren't really into video games at all. We've always had fun playing Wii but never so much that we "had to have one." Since it was a gift, we jsut decided to keep it.
I searched the Wii threads on here but didn't find much basic info.

We have the red edition (console, 1 controller, and 1 nunchuk). Came with Wii Sports and Super Mario. Haven't even taken it out of the box. What else do we need to get this thing set up to be super easy and fun? More controllers? More games? Some super secret fixer upper?
Someone told me you could download old school games like Tetris-- are these downloads expensive? I really think it would be cool to hang on to this thing but I don't want to be dropping $300 a year just to keep it fun.
Note-- We have wireless in the house.

The other thing is, we're thinking the kid would love this, if she were old enough. Perhaps by the time she is there will be something new out? We have no clue "what's hot" in the gaming world and if this thing is going to be extinct by the time we statting enjoying it.

Video game systems, like all other technology, moves very quickly. There are going to be many new systems introduced by the time she is "old enough".

Get another controller, and nunchuck. Download some games (they are cheap), but some new games (they are cheaper than most other systems). You can buy a lot of games for Wii for around $10 new. Wireless will make connecting to the internet easy.

its pretty much a sure thing that by thr time the kid is enough years old that the wii will have been replaced by the next gen of games.

games dont have to cost you money constantly to remain fun, buy used games as you go along at gamestop to minimize costs, selling the older ones back that you no longer want.

i found wii bowling to be fun as well as the mariocart game, world of goo is another game that can keep a player hooked for a long time.
a lot of people have bought the wii fit too

Abigale loves the mini-games, I like the story mode games. I'm playing Epic Mickey right now, and Abi and I just beat Guilty Party. You can buy the wii points and buy games from the wireless. I only buy games used, and prefer Gamestop. I joined their "club" and save 10% on used games, and they have a great return policy. You have 7 days to being back a used game for ANY reason. We have purchased games and they were stupid, or way too hard and they have taken them back. You can also use the Wii for netflix.

oh and a huge +1 on the extra controller. I also love the rechargeable batteries and dock system.

These are about the only real accessories you need for the WII. You'll rarely need four controllers at one time (if so, have your guests bring their own controllers.)

Hooking it up online (wifi) is simple enough.

Get the games with the extra controller (Wii Play), it essentially makes the game $10. The damn controller is $40 alone.

Ok I hooked it up last night. Internet was easy, Super Mario was fun-- totally don't need the classic controller for that (I got use to the remote really easy).
My only beef is I thought this would be a cool way to catch up on the TV shows my DVR missed so I went to abc.com to check, but you need adobe flash player to view the shows at their website, and you can't download it. Sucks. Not a deal breaker, but could have been quite cool.

We would never even come close to using 137 games. We're overwhelmed with our current 3.

I got a component cable off Monoprice. Not a bad upgrade. WiiPlay is enjoyable for tanks!
