I'm pretty sure the pre-source version is still going too. I know (granted I don't have it downloaded) it still appears in my library (steam)

Yeah, but the servers are more spread out and they are mostly a novelty these days running so many plugins and addons that it isn't fun.

This +1

The early days of source killed all of those games for me. Every time you turned it on, there was another update. (Which took hours).

Daaamn... am having flashbacks to the Beta 4 days, when the M4 had a scope, and people could stockpile or "gun-run" weapons back to spawn points for subsequent rounds.

I spent way too much time playing that game back then, co-running chimayhem.com. But when CS went Retail, too many shit-fucks flooded in and the community went straight to hell.

its not source that killed it... it was steam

valve forced everyone to go over to an undersized centralized server source that was overwhelmed and slow as shit with a million updates as they tried to get everyone on teh same page all at once

It wasn't the servers I had a problem with going to source versions of the games, it was the "balancing" changes they made. I was huge into DoD before source dropped but they changed too much and it made it a brand new game.

originally, I was tfc/cs/hl deathmatch hardcore and I was on the steam hate boat. I also loathed the transition...but it's brilliant and I enjoy the new features.

Steam rules. Just log in and play. Automatic updating, buy all your games online and they do download pretty fast. Might have started out slow and buggy but its the wave of the future to how gaming should be.

Last I checked you can play steam games offline

I have to agree with michowski, steam is the forefront of what gamers want right now. It is why there are other services trying to offer up the same thing......origin for example.
