Was going to meetup with a few local scooterists a few nights ago. On my way to the meetup, I found the far side of a monter pothole with both rims. Very jarring, but I remained upright.
A short while later I notice a new rattle coming from my scoot. A light metalic buzz of vibration. Unable to locate it in motion, I continue on to a local shop to look for helmets. I gave the Vino a good once-over when I came back out and noticed that the muffler bolt was sticking out a good two inches.
My first thought was that I had had the misfortune of shearing the bolt, but a light tug and some turning with my fingers hinted that it seemed to still be intact. I threaded it back in with my fingers and went on my way.
Then the buzz returned. I looked down and noticed that the bolt was again working itself loose. Next stoplight, I slide off the back, thread the bolt back in and continue towards the gathering. This process is repeated several times over the next 5 miles.
At the appointed location I borrow a wrench from one of the other riders and begin to tighten the bolt. As I'm tightening it, it gets tight then loose and tight again several times.
Reaching around I try to find where the nut is, to make sure it isn't spinning.
I fail to find a nut. Turning the bolt, I feel the end of the bolt turn. Looking in, in the fading sunset, I see two spots on both sides of the bolt that look shiny. Running my finger over them, they are very rough compared to the rest of the surface around them.
Then it hits me. There is a ear mount on the engine for the bolt, and I managed to shear it off.
I hate potholes.

The bolt and what remains of the mount...
I'm just glad it was the Vino and not the big bug...
