Gay Forum

Probably not the most popular idea, but I thougt I would throw it out there. Any thoughts on pros/cons of having a forum for the gay bikers? I've heard a bit of demand for it, so I thought id make the suggestion.

As far as replies to this thread, lets try to keep this constructive, and be adults please.

In all honesty this was my initial thought. We already have a girls forum that is locked. Would this one be locked as well? If so, when do I get my forum?

I'm not saying hetero, I want my own forum. One for neurotic loners. Hopefully only I will have access to it and I can talk to myself.

I thought about that as well, but while you feel comfortable posting hetero topics in other forums, a lot of gay folks would feel uncomfortable posting gay topics in these forums.

Are there really that many active CLSB members who swing that way, to justify said forum?

And how do you see it being utilized?

Thats a good question, im not totally sure how many -- i can think of better than a dozen or so, and im sure there are more.

As far as utilization, it would be a good place to post up GLBT relevant topics, interact with folks who are in a similar demographic, and (not to keep the heteros out) possibly group rides for the gay/lesbian folks etc

Seriously, The idea had been tossed around privately back a few months ago, but nothing ever came of it. The Chicago Gay Sportbikers group on the yayhoo web seems to have died, the admin is rumored to be tired of managing it, and some of us discussed moving it here.

For those saying "Why do they need a special forum?" I'll offer this;
There isn't anything specifically straight or gay about being a biker. Just like at the track, sexuality isn't an issue that comes up when discussing riding.

But CLSB is much more than simply a sportbiker forum, it's a social group as well, and for some, it's become like a large extended family.
Yet when I post, I always feel the need to censor myself, round off the edges of my comments, and leave the gay out of it, lest I offend sensibilities or get the few on here who want to (at least) verbally bash gays riled up. When I make mention of things like Leather or BDSM or drag, I immediately always get some strong comments back. I've taken some strong ribbing here for some of what I've posted, but I don't usually let it get to me. And I'm one of the more 'out' guys on here. Based on PM's and Rep messages I've received over the years, there are a number of LGBT men and women on this board, but other than a very small handful of us, you'd never know we are here. That's because we don't feel we have a place to express ourselves freely without exposing ourselves to derision and ridicule.

I think it would be great to have a emotionally and intellectually safe place to post. I favor a locked forum, but open to all who are willing to participate in the spirit of what an LGBT forum is or should be: A place to feel safe from the attacks (verbal, emotional, and physical) of the larger society that doesn't 'get' it. A locked forum also would not be indexed, so it wouldn't expose what is posted there to the entire world, thus making it easier to post and not have your uncle - the Reverend Jim - find your post in a Google search.

I realize that policing this new forum, especially with a more welcoming access policy than the "ladies forum" will be a large task. Back when this was discussed, I offered to help. That offer is still on the table if Ody and Tony want to move on this.

Craig

Thanks for the backup beac -- im friends with the admin for the Chicago Gay Sportbikers group -- he is disallusioned since it never really got much traffic -- yahoo groups just arent convenient as opposed to a dedicated board and forums

All good points mentioned

I should mention that I'd be willing to moderate the group, if that would help get it rolling

My logistical type questions would then be, would/should the forum be private?

If so, who amongst your community will manage it? Several lady mods manage the Ladies Room, I would presume that someone amongst your community must be promoted to take on that responsibility and do as such.

There are pros and cons to it being private ... in retrospect i agree it should probably be private, just for the reasons beac stated, etc

That said I would be willing to be responsible for moderating it, since it was my proposal.

I dont see a problem with it, it would probably eliminate some butthurt (pardon the wording) for some of our more sensitive members, and it would be a place for our Gay and Lesbian population to be comfortable expressing themselves. I am all for anything that brings the community closer, and adds constructive members to the site. I would think that a couple of stipulations might be needed:

1. Lesbians wear a badge or something at social events, I dont want to waste my time buying drinks for a fellow carpet muncher.

2. Gays do the same. I would hate to be a girl getting my panties all wet thinking about a guy, only to find out that he smokes pole also.

3. Loki will be the moderator. No matter what he claims, I saw the way he was looking at me.

Aside from some ribbing, etc, this seems to have been a fairly adult discussion, and its not even in a private forum.

My questions have been answered in a helpful way in the past. However, beware asking stupid questions here, as you do get whats coming to you lol

Not really, there is some ribbing going on, but think about it, VERN and Beac as some examples, are a couple of our most active members, in regards to helping people as well as contributing on the board, orgynizing rides (hehe), etc.
They are openly Gay, and as far as I can tell, no one necessarily bashes them, just the occasional comment meant in fun.
