Seriously, The idea had been tossed around privately back a few months ago, but nothing ever came of it. The Chicago Gay Sportbikers group on the yayhoo web seems to have died, the admin is rumored to be tired of managing it, and some of us discussed moving it here.
For those saying "Why do they need a special forum?" I'll offer this;
There isn't anything specifically straight or gay about being a biker. Just like at the track, sexuality isn't an issue that comes up when discussing riding.
But CLSB is much more than simply a sportbiker forum, it's a social group as well, and for some, it's become like a large extended family.
Yet when I post, I always feel the need to censor myself, round off the edges of my comments, and leave the gay out of it, lest I offend sensibilities or get the few on here who want to (at least) verbally bash gays riled up. When I make mention of things like Leather or BDSM or drag, I immediately always get some strong comments back. I've taken some strong ribbing here for some of what I've posted, but I don't usually let it get to me. And I'm one of the more 'out' guys on here. Based on PM's and Rep messages I've received over the years, there are a number of LGBT men and women on this board, but other than a very small handful of us, you'd never know we are here. That's because we don't feel we have a place to express ourselves freely without exposing ourselves to derision and ridicule.
I think it would be great to have a emotionally and intellectually safe place to post. I favor a locked forum, but open to all who are willing to participate in the spirit of what an LGBT forum is or should be: A place to feel safe from the attacks (verbal, emotional, and physical) of the larger society that doesn't 'get' it. A locked forum also would not be indexed, so it wouldn't expose what is posted there to the entire world, thus making it easier to post and not have your uncle - the Reverend Jim - find your post in a Google search.
I realize that policing this new forum, especially with a more welcoming access policy than the "ladies forum" will be a large task. Back when this was discussed, I offered to help. That offer is still on the table if Ody and Tony want to move on this.
