Title Vehicle Out of State

I am temporarily living outside of IL and need to purchase a vehicle in Virginia from a private seller. I have spent some time on Cyberdrive IL and even called the SOS office and I'm still confused.

Is there any way to title & register the vehicle in IL without actually going to IL? Is there a different process for titling an out-of-state vehicle? If I can't title it while out of the state, is there a temporary tag I can get so I can drive it to IL and title it next time I'm in town?

thanks

Oh he can drive. He can drive beyond the limits of the tires, the engine, the car or anything else.

Just get a bill of sale and carry that with you in the vehicle and you'll be fine.

Also make sure you have the sale price on the bill of sale...I think in IL you still just pay a set amount for the year of the vehicle...down here you have to pay 6% sales tax on the retail book value of the vehicle if it doesn't show the purchase price in the bill of sale.

Take the title to the DMV in IL and transfer it...yes you have to physically show up to do it or whoevers name is going to be on the title has to do it. IL gauges you on fees for a title transfer...I think it was $90 just to transfer a title!

It's a frustrating process here in KY. You have to get your vehicle inspected by the Sheriffs Department first to make sure you don't have a cracked windshield, stolen vehicle and all of your lights/turn signals work....understandable.

Then you have to go and wait at the County Clerk's office with a bazillion others to do the paperwork.....What's cool is it only cost me $39 for plates for 1.5 years...woohooo!! They make them expire during your birthday month.

The pain was I called ahead and went to several different buildings to be told 3 different places to go in the wrong order...gettting a license...whole nother story....

In that case....I think you are going to have to pay the sales tax rate for wherever you are registering it here in IL on the purchase price of the vehicle.....

Thanks for the thorough reponse, Kevin. Much appreciated. Sounds like you have gone through this process a few times...

Do you know if I need to get the vehicle emission checked before I transfer title since it is an out of state vehicle?
