Saw it on FB and then went to their site. Gotta say this is a sweet looking ride, can't wait to take a test drive.

I'm diggin' the new interior, I like how the console is higher up. I also like how the car is a bit shorter in height. One thing I don't like is the longer wheelbase. Carreras are already too big.

I wonder if they are going to call it a 998.

A college professor once told us that the Europeans, specifically ze Germans, have a different philosophy than we do when it comes to design. They are constantly looking for ways to improve on an existing design, process, what have you, while we are one to throw one out and start from scratch. Probably why every generation of whatever American made car (except for maybe the Vette) looks completely different from the last while the Euros look almost exactly the same as the previous version.

Yes, the 996, and it is a far superior street car, I'll absolutely concede that. But the primitive rawness of the 993, its amazing looks and the fact that it's the last of the aircooled Porsches just can't be touched IMO.

It's like my S2000, all across the board, the AP2 is a superior street car, gentler suspension, more torque, light understeer, etc. But FUCK THAT SHIT, I want a motherfucking race car, I want balls out, crazy high rev limit, oversteer like a boss, I want a car that's going to kill me if I'm not respectful of the power and capability. To me the 993 is very similar to the AP1, it's a timeless classic that will always be loved, look at their current value compared to the 996, you'll see that I'm not alone in this sentiment.

Looks better with the original Turbo Twist wheels. The new ones are cool, but I don't think anyone is gonna love it or hate it, because it is so similar to the older ones. There are other models if you want to buy something totally different than a 911.

The Beetle, the fucking Golfs, the Beemers with the double headlight with the grill in between, look at every generation of any German made car and the design is pretty much the same. They just rounded out the edges more to modernize it.

Only so much you can do with a car. Subtle styling cues like the kidney grilles are to help with brand recognition. Are you going to lambaste Apple because 90% of their products are white/silver and have a fucking apple on them?

For a few years, yes. But the Mustang didn't become a minivan, it still stayed a sporty coupe, they can't make it look that different. Look at the differences between the 911s here, sure there are similarities, but that's what makes it a 911, they're still night and day different:

Mercs, Audis, Opels are German yet they completely redesign their models. Even most of VWs.

Aside from BMW (kidney stone grill), Porsche (rear fender-bender design) and very few select models, I haven't really seen a progression in German cars when it comes to design.

Wow, didn't know that. I wouldnt have guessed it either. Guess something can be said for their design philosophy afterall.

Most of them go after customer wishes, if you look at every study of a new car and the final result, its way off.

When my brother worked a MB they had so many design ideas and after running questioning of x- amount of customers with multiple pics between the study and the last made car. After all the numbers came in thy ended with a compromise, which was closer to what they had than what they wanted to make... Customer is King, what ever the customer likes, that's what he will buy.

I believe there was a study from Porsche a while back that pretty much said that their customers want no optical changes... I read something about it in the Porsche museum last year.

I am still waiting for them to make the wheel rounder. No shape changes with that in what seems forever!

True , thats why the 993 is still sought after , the design is right . You can buy a 2001 for less than a 1997 in a lot of cases . The 993 carries over a lot of the fundamental elements from earlier models . I think in 2007 , they went back to that "look" . Either way , one of the greatest cars ever made .

What ? There are plenty of good , well maintained 911's out there for under 20k.
