So after hearing on the radio this morning about the possibility of restricting cell phone use, I’m going to start looking for a hands free system for the Jeep. I am looking for something that would be hard wired with a hidden microphone. Charging would be a big plus and radio mute would be great. I had a buddy in high school who has this installed in his Acura and is worked amazingly well. It would mute the radio, play the sound through the speakers (different version that what's shown below), could be heard clearly on the other end, and the mounting dock was super solid – this is pretty much what I’m looking for:

This one is a Nokia accessory and of course it only works with phones from the early 2000’s, but it was a great little product that wouldn’t break the bank. It would need to work with Samsungs for sure, and the mounting part I could probably figure out on my own, but the electronic part is where I’d be looking for some direction. I am trying to avoid Bluetooth since I could never get a clear signal in my vehicles and my new one didn't come with it and Idon’t want to get the ear piece because I think it’s annoying and that stupid blue light is distracting.

Any suggestions on how to make this work?

I think you are jumping the gun a bit.

Eh, not really. I hate holding my phone next to my head while I’m driving anyways, hand goes numb after a while and it’s too small to hold next to my shoulder. I’ve been wanting one of these setups in my own car since I first saw how well his worked (back around 2001) and now that I’ve got a new vehicle, I’m going to keep it for quite a while and thing it would be a great feature to have. I plug in my phone most of the time that I’m in the car, why not have it wired up for me and safer to use all at the same time?

why not use a bluetooth one and leave your phone in your pocket

I used to have one of those Niokia setups. it was awesome, I miss it.

My car doesn't have it built in, and I hate the little headsets. Not comfortable to wear, uses the phone battery to look for Bluetooth when it's not there, easy to lose the headset, blue light flashing is a bit douchey, and on top of that, my last headset was stolen, haha. Every form of bluetooth I've had in the past I've gotten complains from the other end of the phone line telling me that I sounded bad, wasn't loud enough, muffled, etc. so never really been a big fan.

They cost a little more than a simple bluetooth speaker or something, but from what I remember, it was totally worth it with the quality and functionality, right?

Yeah, it's not built in with this car and the last two cars that have had it were the ones that I was having issue with sound quality. That's why I was hoping to go hardwired. I am going to eventually upgrade to an Alpine double-din screen that will probably have it as an option, but for now, nothing in the car.

I think we're going in circles now. I want to build or find myself a kit that I can install BECAUSE I don't have anything in my car right now. Do you have something in mind for a BT system that I'm missing here?

How about speaker function on the phone? buy a cradle for the phone and whala. I know you will have to manually turn down the radio volume, but will basically work the same way as any system you find.

THEY HAVE INSTALL-ABLE BT SYSTEMS THESE DAYS EXACTLY LIKE YOUR DESCRIBING ONLY FOR 2011 NOT 1995 LIKE YOUR PICTURE. THE USUALLY HAVE WIRED CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS IN ADDITION TO THE BT. WHAT IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND?

I guess I havn't heard about this combo before, but that sounds like it would be what I'm looking for. Do you have a link for any of these setups?

Anyone out there can plug in a speaker to a cigarette lighter, have cables draped across their car, or stick some giant suction cup to a windshield, but I'm trying to find a way to do a clean hands free system and keep as much of it hard wired as possible since I've not been impressed with Bluetooth technology. Kickin' it old school with what works I guess

From what I read on it hands free systems like that also would be banned. Only factory installed setups would be legal. Now owuld they consider aftermarket radios with built in blue tooth for phones same as factory setup? Who knows.

Just go buy a radio that has bluetooth. My alpine was less than $200 and had it all built in. You can even get some cheap pioneer or alpine from best buy on sale for less than $120 with it built in. Also they usually have usb plugs so you can plug your android or iphone right to it. Simple and done.

I'm sure I could do that, but I'm pretty particular about my vehicles and you couldn't pay me to put in a cheap single din cd player, let alone some crap from Best Buy in my car. The stereo I want to install isn't going to happen for a while, and yes it does have bluetooth. However, like I stated in the original post, I'm not looking for wireless, I want it hardwired.

Vcook mentioned the BT products now have the option for both wired and wireless, but can't seem to find one that doesn't have some display to install somewhere. From what I'm gathering, I'm probably going to have to piece something together.

I can't think of any current system that uses a wired connection into your phone; it's all over bluetooth. You can get something like this to plug into your existing harness, but it still needs something like a Parrot Bluetooth unit (which has a display):

I understand, that's why I don't want to go with Bluetooth. I think I'm throwing people off by wanting older technology, but I haven't been impressed with how well BT actually works so I'm sticking with what I know works.

What kind of phone do you have? I have had 3 headunits that did bluetooth and never had a problem.

I have a Samsung Epic 4G (Galaxy) now, but the issue isn't in the phone. I've never had an issue with BT functioning, it's a matter of the sound quality. I've had factory BT systems in my old BMW and two Infinitis and none of them sounded good at all, both on my end of the line or the other end.

I don't know what to tell you, but I don't think you are going to find what your looking for. Nobody can even tell when I'm on my bluetooth.
