My first car in high school. I was reprimanded by the principal for squealing tires in the parking lot, and he proceeded to tell me you can squeal the tires on any car, and I disagreed and got a detention. lol

With slight mods, you had a 302 small Block that could push 350hp out of a VERY small car - They de-tuned the motor due to poor rear end from the factory design - Those cars could be made to be a lot of fun - From the 1st season of "Pinks" the car that took it all was a Vega Wagon for Christ's Sake

ENGINES
There was a lone engine for the King Cobra in 1978-a 302-cu.in. V-8 producing 139hp with a tiny two-barrel Motorcraft Model 2150 carburetor. To show how power has increased, there's 138hp in a new Kia Spectra. But this was 1978, before computerized engine management systems, fuel injection and a host of other mechanical improvements that simply did not exist. The 302-cu.in. V-8 had a bore of 4.00 inches and stroke of 3.00 inches. The compression ratio was a measly 8.4:1, and the camshaft was hydraulic. Another reason power was non-existent was that Ford installed a single exhaust on the King Cobra with a single catalytic converter. The King Cobra came with a chrome exhaust tip, but there is some debate about that, whether it was a mid-year introduction or if all the King Cobras left Ford that way, says Mustang II expert Gary Baum, 51, who lives near Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Slight mods?! Like transplanting a built/blown engine? The most they ever pulled out of a factory 302 was something like 225hp - you're not getting to 350hp with slight mods- cams and a power adder maybe. I don't doubt they were awesome when you were in highschool but they're still pieces of crap.

Pinks may have been won by a Vega, but if I drop a Viper V10 in a Chevette, it may move out but that doesn't mean the Chevette from the factory was a good or fast or fun car.

Throw on a Holly 750 Dbl Pumper with the Cam to take it - Re-Do the exhaust with a 3 inch straight back no Cat and you will be damn close to 350hp - Not sure if you would have to do any head work for that but I don't think of Cam and Carb as "Major Mods"

But with that, you will also need a solid posi rear - A nice 411 would do wonders for that ride

I agree that they're not major mods, although the cam is flirting with it- problem is that you're still talking about a 280 horsepower car all day long. Shit man, a '95 Cobra was only putting out 235hp. Without a power adder and a lot of money tuning/tweaking/boring/stroking, that Windsor 302 just isn't very potent- especially one castrated at birth like in the King Cobra.

You would need heads/pistons, intake, cam, carb, and headers to get anywhere near 300 hp with that smog motor? 8.5 compression will get you no where without major surgery. And a 750 carb is waaaaay to much for a 302

Exactly, that engine was a boat anchor and the only things that are worth keeping are the block and crank...EVERYTHING else would need to be replaced for it to make anything even resembling respectable power.

Hmmmm - I was going off what I did to my '83 302 - I dropped in the mods listed above (sans the dbl pump, just went 750) but only went 2.5 inch exhaust and even with my crap ass 373 rear gear, she outran a few 300+ HP cars and I am not THAT good of a driver

I thought the 302 was a 302 was a 302 - Did not think there was that big a diff

Block-wise they are, but smog heads dropped power a bit. A bit lower CR (as said before) also cut hp. Also they switched how they marketed hp ratings in 72. Used to list the gross (engine only, no accessories or air cleaner) up until 72 then they listed it 'net' (air cleaners and all accessories attached and running). So a 71 engine making 300hp would be rated for 250 in 72.

But because the Mustang II isnt one of the "hot sought after" mustangs, people throw them under a bus. Same reason a 69 Belvedere with a 440 doesnt fetch as much as a 69 Road Runner with the same exact motor.

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.
