Cage Front Plate in IL?

Ok folks, I know that we have a few police on the board, as well as some folks that are very familiar with the law in Illinois. Ponch's thread about license plates made me wanna ask this.

I have a car without a front plate on it. The car does not have a spot on the front of the car for a plate mount, and there are no holes or places to mount it. Of course, I could drill the bumper, but then the bumper is permanently damaged.

Questions are simple.

What is the penalty, and what is the likelihood that I'll get a ticket without that front plate on there?

Is is legal for me to have the plate in my front window on the passenger side?

I hear that if I park in a public parking lot, make sure that the no plate side is nose in... or I might come back to a ticket as well. Do they really troll parking lots looking for this infraction?

Just curious your thoughts, thanks in advance.

Don't know about the plate in the front windshield thing, but. My wife got 2 tickets for not having front plates while she was parked downtown. They were 20 dollar tickets.

Not a police officer, but I've researched quite a bit because I don't have the front plate on my car.

No, you cannot have it in your front window. That could actually hurt you in some situations as well. You can longer have the cop think you could just be from out of state if they see your IL plate in the front window.

Don't park on public streets in the city, it's a very easy way to get a ticket. Can't remember the fine off the top of my head though.

You can get a ticket in a public lot or a private lot if it is able to be seen from a public road. I got one in my apartment complex parking lot because of this. I wanted to argue it but it wasn't worth the $50 ticket.

It all a comes down to a small dollar gamble. For me it's worth not drilling my bumper but then I drive a car that doesnt draw attention and [knock on wood] Ive havent had an issue in almost 5 years.

Front plate in the window will draw attention, plus if pulled over you cant play dumb. I also would not want that plate turning into a projectile if you are in an accident.

I got pulled over for having mine in the windshield but that was 10 years ago. IL law states it has to be mounted to the front of the car. Not sure if they ever got rid of that law though.

I don't back the car into my driveway as I don't want the police seeing it from the street and ticketing me. I assume that this is what I need to do?

Makes great sense on the plate hurting me, as well as hoping that they think I am from out of state.

I wouldn't worry too much about your house, unless you require village stickers and even then, it's probably a very minuscule chance. I got mine because a cop walked around my apartment complex checking for them. I was actually pulled in, but if you looked at the right angle, you could see a public road through a path. Pretty weak to me, but it wasn't worth arguing to me. Most of not liked ol' Noodles for some reason

A guy I know (not me of course) has been driving for the last few years without a front plate, and hasn't had any issues to date. He's been pulled over (unrelated), had parking tickets in the city (unrelated) and left his car overnight in monitored lots like O'hare without incident, warning or otherwise.

He's not driving a fancy car - or making a political statement about it. It was just ripped off in a car wash and he's too lazy to put it back on. ...or so I'm told.

Car is required to have a Cook County sticker, which it does in the front window. They patrol my neighborhood every day, so the car in front would be seen. Just not sure if they can ticket me in my driveway. I know that they ticketed me for no County sticker when we were parked in the street.

The one on my daughters car was ripped off parking in the snow. They keep it in the back seat now... but they live in Kansas, so the car is not in Illinois except when they visit. KS does not require a front plate, so limited to no issue there. That got ripped off 4-5 years ago, no problems so far.

Just got pulled over for this in my 300zx last week by a lake county Sheriff.

Has to be fixed to the bumper in some way. Doesn't matter how or where as long as the state, numbers and registration are visible.

Officer was kind enough to let me go on a verbal warning.

As long as it's not touching the sidewalk or street they can't do a damn thing. It's like having it on blocks (common in your subdivision I'm sure) and having them ticket you for unsafe vehicle conditions.

Worst case - try it out. If you get a ticket - make a decision about whether or not you want to put a plate on after that.

Just curious your thoughts, thanks in advance.

1) this is a revenue generating compliance infraction that goes against the registered owner of the vehicle.
The likelyhood is the same as with all title 9 ( Thats our traffic code here in IN) infraction both moving and compliance, meaning if I feel like giving you a ticket I will.... If I don't I won't.

2) public parking lots are fair game. Unless posted as private property expect that any vehicle is up for visual inspection and thus able to be cited. Yes, there are guys who patrol lots for no other reason than they can.

3) since we don't have front plates in IN the plate on the dash isn't something I can comment on BUT if we did have front plates and you had it on the dash and I was a DICK I would cite you for obstruction of view and creating a hazardous environment. ( you brake hard it goes flying and hits you, you could loose control of the vehicle)

Also, just about EVERY vehicle produced since 1990 has a provision for a front plate bracket. Just cause your car didn't have it when you bought it or you don't want to spend the money on it doesn't exempt you from your local laws. That's what a judge will say in court.

Arrogance has to be earned.

Do NOT park it on the street in the city, you'll be ticketed for sure. As I walk down Michigan I often see tickets on the hood of every vehicle w/o front plate. That goes double for O'Hare and Midway parking lots.

Ponch - great info, thanks!

Jaime - actually, I just checked. It does have a cover that opens on the passenger front. It only has a large hole that is threaded. I guess that it is for installing a tow hook. Thanks for the link, that might work!

Their instructions:

Looks like that will work!

SO, message seems to be, risk it if you want. Jaime gave me a solution in the meantime if I want to do something about it, and DO NOT put the plate in the front window.

Thanks Gents!

Cook county is hurting for money and are writing tickets for everything they can. Also you can get a ticket in your driveway.
