Rough Idle 98 buick lesabre 3800 motor

Anyone have any ideas on a rough idle on a 98 buick lesabre 3800, changed plugs, wires, air filter, PCV i run shell premium. ive got 125,000 on it and its well maintained.

Should i change the egr valve, fuel filter? Its not that rough but not smooth? any ideas on what to check?

How rough is it? Are you sure it an issue with the way it's running and not just clapped out motor mounts transmitting vibration into the car?

Yes but if a coil died it would have a severe miss, the check engine light would be on, and it the engine would be running more than a little rough.

If it has just a slight misfire at only at idle I would suspect a vacuum leak but it's hard to see what it's actually doing through the internets .

remove the iac sensor, and clean the inside. Pull the EGR valve off and clean that tube, with a brush and spray it

I had a rough idle, rough running engine (different make) and it turned out to be a cam sensor.

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."

Open the hood and listen for a hissing sound while it's running. Spray carb cleaner around vacuum lines and where the intake manifold meets the cylinder heads and listen for a change in RPM or the way it's running. Try not to set anything on fire while doing this . If it had a bad enough vacuum leak to cause a driveability issue it would probably have lean codes in it though.

Is it running rough or just idling too slow? The idle isn't adjustable on that car as it is controlled by the computer. If you adjust the throttle stop screw the computer will just open the idle air control valve less. Try cleaning the throttle body if it's just idling too slow. Don't go spraying a bunch of shit into the throttle body. Spray carb cleaner or brake cleaner on a rag and use that to wipe all the carbon out of the inside of the throttle body and off of the throttle plate. There is probably a very small hole on the throttle plate, make sure that is open too. Take the idle air control valve off and wipe the pintle on that clean and the hole it goes into. If the EGR valve is stuck open a little it will cause it to idle rough but this would most likely also set a code because it has an electronic EGR valve with a built in EGR position sensor. The EGR valve is easy to remove and see if there's a chunk of carbon holding the pintle open.

This is all just a guess. It's difficult to diagnose something over the intronets with just a vague description of what it's doing.

Other common problem on those engines are the fuel injectors or was it the 3100 series?

May need to scope it to be sure..

You can also make sure the wires are fully attached to the plugs... The back ones are a pain to get fully seated.
