Wrenching on the Miata, and having a blast.

I got the Miata for a great price, and I knew it had some issues. First, it has been sitting for 5 years, and even here in Florida, metal rusts. The wipers were horrably rusted. A little sandpaper, rustoleum paint, and new blades made a huge improvement.

Next, the car doesn't run well, and has trouble starting. After some testing, I figured it was a bad fuel pump and pulled it out.

Ewwwwww!!! This car has sat a long time, and the fuel is less than spectacular. I'll empty the tank, clean it out, and I found a used assembly to drop in. Mine is really rusty, and I question the reliability (thanks Stanimal for the advice). There is a huge following for this car, so parts are readily available. So far, the car has been pretty easy to work on, and I'm having fun working on it.

Yeah no kidding, that's just crazy. Next thing I would do is clean the fuel system out, check out injectors and get some treatment going for that.

It's pretty gross, the whole car needs a thorough cleaning. Luckily, it's a little car. The fuel filter didn't have any crap in it, so I'm hoping the injectors aren't too bad. I'll use a cleaner with them, then replace the fuel filter and pump assembly. Pumping out the old fuel and cleaning the tank with a scraper and rags should get most of the other crap out.

The power drivers window didn't work. I ordered a used regulator off eBay and it should be here in a few days. Common problem with this car, and it's another easy fix. I might try and tint the windows myself in the near future. The back window is glass, so it should turn out really sharp.

Good thinking Tom, thanks. This car is in high demand here, especially being a convertable and having an automatic transmission. This miata was ordered with nearly every option, so that boosts the value as well. I have had offers for it for nearly double what I got it for, and that's with it running like shit. But it will remain in our stable for a while, I'm trying to talk Mandy into participating in an auto crossing event. That's what this little whip was built for, cheap fun and lots of smiles.

Jealous? Build me a AR15 chambered in 9mm and I'll give you my RD350. Deliver it to me, and we can be a sight rolling in the Miata.

Replaced the drivers window regulator and it's good to go. I scooped a medium cup sized cup from Krystal burger almost to the top with sludge from the tank. Then scraped and cleaned and dropped in the new fuel pump assembly.

Yay, it runs! Now I can start on the slow throttle response. I'm sure cleaning the injectors, MAF, and intake will make a noticeable difference.
