Anyone know of a reputable car mechanice in Palatine/Arlington Heights near Lake Cook & Rt 53? I need to get my engine looked at and wanted to see if anyone had some recommendations.

IDK, I'm no car guy. It sounds a little rough in idle, but I want to get it looked at because it's making sort of a higher pitch whinning sound that seems to be heard when slowing down and is in correlation to RPM's.

HA! Vague I know.

Could be one of the 3 accessories. Power steering, AC, or alternator. Hard to pinpint the exact noise sometimes though, best to see if someone here knows someone who can check it out and tell you what it is for sure.

Rough idle, correlation to RPM's, only hears it at slow speeds? Sounds like a bearing somewhere to me.

Who knows though, someone needs to take a good look at it before replacing stuff. Alot of those pumps/bearings/pulleys are expensive too, make sure you take it somewhere that will get it right the first time.

When someone tells u they don't know much on cars, you should always take their issues with a grain of salt. Sometimes they are dead on the money about when and where the problem starts and sometimes they are stating a problem that isn't much of a problem.

That rough idle could be normal or could be something like a loose hose. That high pitched could be what people are saying or maybe your brakes. I've seen people say engine noise when they hear their brakes noise. Find someone to take a look, most small shops will do a inspection for free or close to it.

Just stay away from big known shops as most likely its $100 for them to look at it and tell you "nothing is wrong"

Oh, those 3 pulleys people are talking about. The most common one is a idler/ tensioner pulley. I did a tensioner on my maxima at 123k and I did idler on my g35 at 64k. Both serve same function, its just a matter of what they put in your car. Parts were about $50 and $15 belt. Took me 30 minutes, I figure a shop would want an hour. So $100 labor rate. My pulleys never gave a bad idle, just a god awful noise when the bearing dried up

So, here's how my wonderful yesterday went.

I dropped the car off at the mechanic at 7:30am.

He calls a little while later says its the tensioner and associated belts, $315.

He does all that, then calls back and says the car sounds better but it's still not right.

He wants to replace the power steering pump. Total now $700.

I call @ 3:30pm to make sure the care is going to be done, "Yeah should be in about 20 minutes." I get there and get, "we needed another part, it's not here yet. It should only take a few minutes to get in once it is here."

That part showed up 30 minutes later. Oh, it's 102 degrees outside, their lobby is westward facing with a glass wall and their AC broke. Now I'm sweating my balls off.

Another 45 minutes go by and they tell me it's still making noises and they want to keep the car to spend more time on it in the morning. They offer a "reimbursed" rental car, which the only thing Enterprise has left at 6pm is cargo vans. Oh my excitement.

So, I have no car, don't know how much more this is going to cost me, and still don't know what was wrong. The only plus is that they've told me they won't charge me for any additional labor since they can't figure out what's wrong.

Today, shall be interestnig.

Lupi

Sounds like your getting screwed over by a shop that has no clue what they are doing. I wish I saw this thread earlier I would have helped you out.

Well on the plus side you should end up with a fairly new car by the time they replace everything.
