Every year I think my wife's cat is going to die and I'll get my basement back so I can put my own computrainer down there.

I'm also finding it pretty easy to duplicate computrainer classes on my home trainer. I'd actually find it more useful to have a class for those long trainer rides!

Ken, I'm curious, most people I speak with lose a lot of watts off there FTP from their peak in the summer. How much do you typically lose when you start up again, that first test in the winter?

Not exactly sure based on peak, because I don't test during peak, I just ride and race. But from the start of the winter classes I am around 270-280 and go to 300-310, so around a 10% gain. I have done this every year with virtually the same results, though each year seems to lead me stronger into the season and weaker during the season from work/no sleep/stress etc. This year will probably be my worst year based on a lot of factors, I am guessing.

I started last year around 240 and ended at 285. I started this year at 256. I'm hoping this is the year I get close to 300!

This year I'm not doing a marathon unless its late in the year. I'm focussing on the bike. We'll see how that goes

Unfortunately, I just lost my swim coach so I'm not sure what I'm going to do there!

My short term plan is to work on running more than biking, and then ramp up again for cyclocross season. My kid is digging the cyclocross, so I will plan on doing the whole season with her.

Mostly carmichael "mountain biking". Basically a single workout thats a series of short intense intervals. I have a vision quest dvd as well that seems more comprehensive with multiple workouts, but havent gone past the first one though

Wellfit had an evening class on Wednesdays. I attended the 1st one last Wednesday then yesterday(Tuesday afternoon) I got an email saying the class has cancelled, but you are welcome to attend the 5:45am one or get a refund. WTF

I went this morning but Daaaaaaymm that is early.

Are there any other bike classes you guys know about North of Downtown Chicago or maybe near Rosemont that are any good?

They have classes at one of the Athletico's up there, but it's for XXX members so you'd have to join the team. I think there is 2 Visionquest facilities up there too. One is somewhere in the city the other in Highland Park. You should be able to find out on there website. Otherwise, check the racermate website. They have locations for computrainer classes on there too.

I just started cycling in December, and signed up for CT classes in Arlington Heights at VillageCycleSport. I'm only going to one 90 minute class per week. For the next session I opted for the 2hr endurance class on Saturdays. I really like it, but I have no basis of comparison. Last week's class we spent 25 minutes above FTP.

My FTP is the worst in the class. Awesome. My next FTP test is on Tuesday. I hope I'm not the worst, again.

No worries, just keep at it and your power will increase, especially if you are out of shape. A little conditioning will take effect and you should notice some pretty good power increases. Great place to take those classes. Is your coach Linda? Bob?

Bob, he's also my Tri coach too.
Perhaps I'll get a 'most improved' award.
I signed up for the Tour De Farms MS ride in June as well.

Thanks. How do you know Bob?
What's a better measure: W/kg or FTP?

I used to do those classes at that location with Linda in the early AM, and with Bob a few times on the weekends.

Depends on what you are asking. FTP is all out power you can produce, regardless of your weight. W/Kg is your power versus your inputted weight, or a better measure of how fast you would be. There are a lot of guys whose power is high, but they also weigh 250 lbs., so on a real ride they would be super slow, especially if hills were involved. Some of the fastest guys will be 140-150 lbs. and hit FTPs of around 300.

The average recreational or newbie cyclist will NOT come close to those numbers though.

Well I have the weight thing down, I'm 144; power is another story, my FTP was 155. I'm looking forward to see what kind of progress I've made though.

That's not terrible, but I'm sure you will show a good increase after the classes. I know I did even though I stay pretty fit already, and so did all the people I know that go. IMO that special software they use makes all the difference.
