2012 Road rides

Where are you guys riding this year?

I plan on doing some crystal lake rides, Harper, and maybe some rides with Brian's group if I'm allowed. Still haven't touched my road bike since summer so I'm off to a late start. Oops.

I'm working for Lifetime Fitness this Summer. We will have rides every Sunday, probably at 8:30am starting in Naperville at Commissioners Park on Rt59 and 111th. Anyone is allowed to come out! I'm also planning on doing some MTB'ing on Saturdays. I haven't been able to work out my schedule yet, but more than likely I'll be doing some late morning or afternoon rides and probably some trail run bricks. But I'm thinking about going to the lakefront first in the morning for OWS'ing.

I will be all over the place as always depending on my schedule. Planning a road ride this Sunday afternoon for anybody interested. Spirited pace though, so no Turkeylegs out there.

How far are these rides? What will the pace be?

I'd like to get in on them but I don't want to be dusted. lol

depends....

We are going to wait and see the dynamic of the group before we figure out the ride dynamics. Last year we had an advanced group that would do 56 miles at 20-22mph. I don't think we'll have this group this year, but some of us may break off and do that on our own. The main group will be 35-56 miles at 18-19 would be my guess. We are also talkign about doing a beginner ride once a month that would be slower/shorter. Reguardless, they are no drop rides. There are spots on the ride we will make sure to wait for any stragglers and make sure they are still with us or have a plan for getting back to their car. Warrenvile LTF also has their own cylce club. They have 3 groups with varying difficulties. I did lead their advance group rides last year, but this year we are doing our own for the Romeoville club.

Sweet. I could do the 35-56 at 18-19 right now. Once I get back into riding shape I might be able to keep up with the 22mph pace.

When do they start? Oh, and please let me know any group riding etiquette tips. The only group I've ridden with was you and your buddy.

not one bit! these are people from all different backgrounds from spin class junkies to ironman. You'll find everything from classic steel frames to very very expensive cervelo tt bikes . We usually just break up the group at a point and let fast folks go further and faster on their own and let slower folks go back at their pace. All they ask is you have a helmet and a road bike. There is one guy we alow with a MTB, but this dude keeps up with the 20-22mph group on it, it sick! LOL

Damn, that's fast on a heavy bike!

Looking forward to riding with you guys. I started getting tired of my solo-route last year.

Keep in mind, drafting will give you probably a 2-3 mph advantage, so if you can hold 20 on your own you will have no problem holding 22-23 in a group.

It's hard to teach group ride etiquette. Just pay attention and be aware of the people around you. It's probably similar to working with others when climbing, it takes practice to work really well together.

Masters swimming has the same "group ride" dynamic. Some people are good others aren't. I'm getting a good handle on the dynamic in the pool but I've been swimming consistently since Oct.

Mostly Brian's rides on the road, maybe throw in some others along the way. As always, MTB is the priority though...

Too bad I wasn't in the market for a tri bike, i'd buy one of these two. I almost want to buy one just to have and then get a road bike next year.

P3- http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/bik/2955913797.html
Argon- http://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/bik/2954760713.html

Edit: I'm now thinking that it would be better to hold off until next year to buy a road bike because the new sram red will be released.
