Thinking about CX

I got into cycling again this year for the first time since high school. I thought I needed a mountain bike since all the trails around are limestone, so I got a hard tail 29er. But it's not fast enough. I keep getting passed by those pesky road bikes with knobbies. And seeing them at Palos is just awesome.

Most of my other riding would be 20-30 mile solo trips after work during the week in the local forest preserves and prairie path. I would like to see if I can stomach road riding with the group that goes with the local bike shop, and maybe some rally-type events. CX races aren't out of the question, but I would not be serious.

I'm thinking of a Ridley X-Ride, and getting a second set of rims to mount road tires to. I would want to get taller gearing on the road rims. Am I trying to do too much with one bike? Does anyone have any advice?

I bought a cx bike to do double duty between limestone paths and road, and quickly found that hard limestone paths are anything but enjoyable. Damn near lost my fillings in less than a mile. I've ridden palos quite a bit on my hardtail 29er and not interested whatsoever in taking the cross bike out there. I'm trying my first cx race this weekend, hoping thats a good time. I think mostly on grass so shouldnt be as jarring.

Swap to road tires and its fine on pavement though. I use mine mostly on the trainer. Hindsight being 20/20, i'd just get a road bike. YMMV

My advice is to try one before you buy, on the surfaces you plan on using it on.

I'm 5' 8"

I'd like to get one maybe a touch small for me so my GF could try it.

If you are thinking of doing all that stuff, then you need a CX bike, and you can just use regular road wheels on the road, which I have done with mine.
