Night Riding (mtbing)

Anyone here have any experience riding at night on singletrack? It's something I've been interested in trying myself but not by myself. As far as I know, Kettle is the only place in the area(within 1.5-2hrs anyway) that allows it being that the park is open until 11pm.

Starting to do more research on all the available lighting systems out there now. Definitely don't want to dump too much money into it from the start and then find riding at night is not for me but at the same time I don't want to cheap out and get something unreliable or totally inadequate for light output. Seems that going with both a handlebar and helmet light is the ideal setup.

Bar mount and helmet mount are preferred, unless you are riding in a large group where everybody has lights, then it's not too bad. It's fun, and different. Sucks when you don't have adequate light, as you can imagine. We used to ride every week on Des Plaines River Trail and got chased a few times. No biggie.

I only have once out in Ohio on very familiar and fairly technical singletrack, moreso than Palos. My buddy had a couple higher end lighting kits, no idea what they were, and let me borrow his bar mount light while he used a helmet and bar setup. Basically, it was a really fun way to make the same old trail interesting again, but it was spooky as hell . It was pitch black everywhere but where you pointed the light, which was a narrow beam that stayed 10-15 feet ahead on the trail. I was sure we were going to get kidnapped by tweakers
It was a fun experience but not something that made me want to do it all the time.

Buy the brightest lights you can afford. I run 2 700 lumen nightriders, and would like more. I prefer nightrider, they seem to have the best warranty available. Once you have your lights, a 24 hour team race is about as fun as it gets. As far as location, Kettle is the best bet for legal night riding.

It is, but for a team of 4, you need a fifth person to wake you up and keep everyone going. It also teaches you to ride at night, because in race mode you have a tendency to try and go faster and worry less about being abducted . Hydration and eating can also be a huge pain. But it was fun, and we will be doing it again next year, might even do more than 1.

A 24hr team race does sound fun. Which one have you done grndskpr? Also thanks for the info on the lights!
