Decisions...

Contemplating something here, maybe you guys can help out.

Option 1: new 'cross bike for fall. Fuji works but too big and getting beat. Specialized Crux Apex disc most likely replacement.

Option 2: spend a little more and throw XX1 drivetrain and a new set of wheels, say American Classic MTB 29s, on the Air 9.

Discuss...

Save your money on the upgrading the components. Waste IMO. You have great stuff on there and for the money you're shaving a little weight and getting no improvement in function. Wheels you could possibly do, but buy whatever you're going to spend the most time on between wheels/x bike.

True. The wheels are a weak point, drivetrain is fine but the combined functionality and bling factor of XX1 is very attractive. Cross bike would definitely see a lot of use, plus I could sell the fuji for scrap value

When you kick ass in cross as you already do I would get the XX1. The bling factor of the group is when you don't have to make redundant shifts due to the overlapping of gears on a bike with multiple rings up front. This is the most advanced technology between your two options. Buy that Crux Disc and by the time cross season rolls out they will have hydraulic disc like our mtb's and you will be on a bike with dated technology. There were so many cx bikes at the end of this season for sale it's not even funny. At the middle or end of next year you can get the crux on sale if you still want it.

damnit tony!

Same arguement for both really...price will come down on XX1 and/or competitive options will emerge, competition will drive further improvement. If hydro brakes are available its just a component swap instead of full brake + wheel + fork replacement. I'm leaning hard toward the cross bike, just wish I could have it all!

Which will you use more, and/or which will make you faster. I think the XX1 is badass, but really won't make you any faster. A new cx bike I think will make you faster, especially the discs. Hell even I want a new cx bike for next year with disc brakes.

I doubt either is going to make you faster in reality. Maybe the X bike slightly, but nothing a little more engine couldn't handle. If you buy a front chain guide/ditch front deraileur, shifter/and buy a rear cog you have the gearing you want. Cheap/easy! Personally, I've prioritized training over training tools this year. IT's cool to have the latest greatest stuff, but I'd rather be faster.

Sell fuji/use funds for wheels, 10spd set up and buy yourself the x bike!

I don't know that either would make me "faster", but a new cross bike would be more likely to. Crux would save about 2.5 pounds over my current bike, and improved fit/geometry may help me get along a little better. As a bonus, fewer heckles would go toward my bike and more directed at me

I think you'll be surprised at how well disc brakes work during a CX race compared to the old rim brakes.

Well to be fair, that particular bike isn't leaning against the old heap anymore...during the trial period I decided to trade in and step down a bit in price (actually, more than a bit )

That was a Superfly...I wound up ordering a Cobia. Should be here tomorrow or Thursday! What's funny is, in test riding them I actually liked the cheaper bike better, weird. Still get an air shock though, which is nice ...and this one comes with pedals

I tried to explain why more expensive bikes don't come with pedals to a friend after buying that bike...it turned in to a very awkward conversation. That's kind of hard to explain to people that don't ride bicycles much, as it turns out.
