Kettle Klassic Road Race

Team and I are doing the Kettle Klassic this Sunday, do you treat it like a long 36 mile time trial, which is kind of how the Barry Roubaix was treated in my book, balls to the wall go as hard as you can? Never done a long road race yet really.

Probably around the same, but I can tell you if you plan to race it and do well, you will go when the peloton goes. Figure out your strengths and your weaknesses, and use them in the race. If you suck at sprinting, then push the pace as much as you can to avoid any strong sprinters towards the end and drop the slackers early on. If it's uphill to the finish and you suck at that, then make a break early on. If the finish uses your strengths well, then sit in until the very end and then hammer. Try something new instead of waiting until the end to see what happens.

Thanks.

All Cats take off at same time, I'm guessing. So it should be very similar to the Barry then. It has rolling hills in the course and is a looped course. I guess I'll hang with group and see how it plays out. Need more races under belt to develop race craft if you will.

Now if the chest congestion will go away, It killed my swim this morning as could not breathe and getting tired far to fast.

A road race where all CATs take off at the same time? Never heard of it. Not to say that isn't the case, but that definitely would be weird. They usually want to keep the competition amongst the same CATs, much the same way with lapped riders helping the leaders of your team. That is against the rules. I'm sure they don't want a CAT 4 drafting a CAT 1 to the finish because they are on the same team. You might want to check on that.

What I meant was all cat 5 start together, cat 4 at another time and so on.

Either way I just pissed off a few on my mates as they are thinking we can pace line the whole thing Only paceline, I'm doing is off the leaders. You know as well as I, that Brian and I will take off if the group goes. They are thinking this is a team event and I'm like no, it's every man for them-self, that didn't go over to well.

If they are paying your entry, then stick with them. If you pay, then fuck 'em. Actually, I'd prolly still fuck 'em if they paid too. Nobody enters a race to not win. Some of my closest friends would cut my tire knowing I would go careening off a cliff if they could beat me that way.

That was the best crit I've done yet compared to the rest. Don't miss it. I just have to have a MTB emphasis this year, so I don't want to miss the local races. Ask them to change the date for me. If they do, I'll race the crit.

It's a race, not a team time trial. When the faster guys take off (this is where the race is happening) and you are strong enough to stay with, you stay with the lead group. If someone on the team isn't strong enough then they get dropped. Not sure where they guys on your team come up with all these weird "rules". They sound like boy scouts "hey guys wait up for me".

Got up late to not really eat anything but a cliff bar. Race went OK but we went way out of the way the first lap an extra 4 miles and they cut a lap off our race to make up for it. That is why garmin map going out and then diagonal to get us back on course. In any event it was a fun race but started cramping towards the end on the last lap, inner thigh cramps, which was goofy. Last turn on to the finish got pushed way wide that I had to take to the embankment (wish I had mtn bike at that time) to avoid getting hit, lost momentum and drive to spirit the finish.

Some nasty crashing at the end. A few people missing skin big time on shoulders and legs. It was a fucked up finish line area right after a turn. Brian my teammate, thought it would be best to be on outside into for me to lead him out, well it wasn't as rode up have the embankment to avoid getting plowed. I should have gone with original plan and that was to stay inside, brake late, hug corner and sprint out, Oh well live a learn I guess.

Finished 26 out of 55 in the Cat 4/5 overall in the race and 9th for cat 5.

road racers are crazy! always crashing and gettin all discombobulated

I spent yesterday grinding gravel out in Streator for the IVCA dirty mudder. The gravel was a little more harsh than the Roubaix, but fewer and less severe potholes. Varied from fine sandy gravel to golf-ball sized chunks, thin over hardpacked dirt to thick and wheel-sucking. The taint took a beating . Weather wasn't nearly what it was supposed to be but not really a surprise there. I ran into Bob at the start so headed out with him. Basically just made a relaxed training ride out of it as I was going easy at the start chatting with Bob and let the lead group get away, and would rather not die of boredom doing the whole thing solo . They put on a great ride, the course was well marked, aid stations stocked with anything you could want (amazing home made cookies!! ) and the food and beer after the ride was utterly fantastic. Only thing working against this ride is the scenery is mind numbingly boring, but glad I did it and overall a great day on the bike

You are not kidding. I rubbed elbows more yesterday then all the trackdays and such I did. It is hazardous to your health is what I'm thinking.

I was going to help a lady that crashed, put medicated rub on her thigh but opt'd not to have the police called on me as she was fine looking..
