Trek CXC Waterloo, WI

Any of you fools going this weekend? This is the replacement for the old USGP CX race, now held at the Trek Headquarters. Course looks boring and a total hammerfest, so not really looking forward to it, but we are going both days.

Did you see the preview? Looks beyond boring. Nowhere to punt anybody off course or pile drive them into a turn.

yeah saw that. I saw a course map somewhere a ways back that included barriers and maybe other stuff like sand and whatnot, but yeah not exactly a thrilling course

Those were shorter power surges and hills, which I do alright with. The flat hammer sections I seem to lose power on. Not sure why, but that is what happens every race. Maybe last race was a fluke with the conditions, but I'm gonna try like hell this weekend to stick with the faster guys if I can.

should I waste my time and money on another rim brake bike? new 2012 crux aluminum w/ apex, throw lightish wheels on it and call it done, say all in about 1600. Or go for broke, literally, and get a new '14 cf w/ rival and hydraulic, and throw my old easton rollers on it.
Rode the fuji last for the first time after being on the tarmac for all year. Nuff said

If you don't see yourself getting nutty and upgrading once more with a $4K bike or something crazy then get the new disc bike and be done. I'm only riding this bike as a stepping stone to a disc bike next year. But of course, if I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna have the shit of all shits and go all out. This spring I'll be looking for a Super X or equivalent in disc. Considering putting a Quarq on it too. Wish I had stats on power from last year. I was killing niggaz in the first half of the season, then not as much towards the end. Curious if it was me and my power, or others were just getting faster.

Yes, I will upgrade to a 4k bike as soon as possible. I hate my budget right now
Not sure I'll do anything right now. I didn't think the budget bike is the way to go for me right now, just needed someone else to have the same opinion.

My policy is, either go all out and get your money's worth that way like I have with the Look and now Evo, or buy something that won't lose too much value before you sell it, like my Super X.

My race reports.

Signed up for masters 1/2/3 with all the usual fast guys, and I figured some other fast guys too. I knew it would be tough. Got a 3rd row start, of about 50 guys. Whistle blew, I took off, shot up the left side which opened up after we got out of the gate, and hammered up to 4th place somehow. I was wondering how I got there, but screw it, I just went with it and did my best to stay where I was. I was killing, I mean killing, the tight stuff, being very aggressive with the corners, taking spots, and covering others from taking my line. Only got yelled at once this race, which always lets me know I'm pissing people off, so that fits into my race plan.

We headed down the hill, and somebody balled it up at the bottom and a few people piled into him and threw everybody else off their game. That screwed me up a bit, and in the commotion I lost quite a few spots, and then I lost quite a few more as the race progressed. Still wound up finishing 17th somehow, which I was pretty happy with considering the level of competition there.

Dani finally looked like her old self again and tore up the girls race winning by quite a bit. She was super happy and won a $300 Bontrager kit. Her bike handling is top notch. The girl does have some skills, and in warmups she did both hills which were pretty steep and technical without an issue at all. Happy day for both of us.

Day 2 was interesting as always. Dani killed it again and had a great race, but there were two other girls who have done the whole WORS series this year and are really strong. I think Dani's handling is better, but they are stronger, so the racing was awesome, and they were together the whole race. Pretty exciting.

My race was great once again, with some drama again too. Same players, same start, and I wound up in 6th place going down the hill. I stayed where I was almost the entire first lap until the barriers. I was flying through the barriers all weekend, and this one was just as fast, but when I put my bike down and hopped on, my chain was off. I had to get off and put that back on quickly right before the second downhill, so I was unclipped going down that and almost housed it again there, but probably lost a half dozen spots at least seeing as it was the first lap and we were all freight training through there.

Worked my way back to where I should be, and I was duking it out with this guy going back and forth between pedaling sections where he was strong and technical sections where I was strong. On the last lap we were running up the hill where I would pass him each lap, and he decides to pinch me into the fencing while we were running up knowing I was gonna pass him. While I was pushing my bike up, I held out my other arm to keep him from coming over any more so I could pass him, and he flipped out telling me I'll be sorry blah blah blah. I was cracking up.

So we were rounding this long sweeper, and he thought it would be smart to squeeze me again trying to make a pass. Elbows out, and he goes down like a dead sailor. I wish there was a way to identify who the motorcycle racers are in the group so people know not to mess with them. I hear him yelling his ass off while picking his bike up and I was cracking up again.

We finished, and while I was hanging out with a couple team members, he comes up to me and starts talking smack. I had to explain how he made an aggressive move and I just countered it. No biggie. Mess with the bull you get the horns! I doubt he will try to chop me off again though. Finished 17th again, which I'm surprised at because most of these guys are super fast CAT 1s, so I'll take it.

Dani raced the 45 minute womens race after her junior race and got 9th out of 17 women. She had a great weekend and so did I. Couldn't be happier. The course was so much fun. Not at all what the video made it look like.

Saw Sean out there with his ridiculous kit. Kevin looked like he was hurting and worked his way back from starting out 10th or something on the first lap. Sweet bike though.

Results: http://trekcxccup.com/?page_id=16

Day 1: http://connect.garmin.com/dashboard?cid=30975524

Day 2: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/380241272

Legs feel good today and I did a 30 mile recovery ride on the MTB. Looks like I can keep wattage at 200 all day long and not even worry about it. My HR around that power should be roughly 130 or so. I will probably use that as a basis for La Ruta.

Another typical day at the races for me. New bike felt pretty good out of the box. Got there a few hours early to pick up practice laps, course was a fun layout but bumpy as all hell. Circling the pits as we are getting ready to grid up I'm looking around and realize that the fat guy ratio was pretty low and much of the field was looking competitive. I registered the day it opened and gridded up in the second row. Had a clean start and in the top 10 as we get through the bowl and few tight turns before heading down the hill and then run back up. I was dying right off the bat, really need to ramp up the high intensity workouts. My gameplan of hammer the start, all out for a bit, recover slightly, all out as needed/able was ok I just didn't have the gas and felt slow through the entire race, giving up spots here and there and only gaining back a few. I thought I finished better than I did, but ended up with 23rd. Overall I had a uneventful race, nothing exciting other than watching/avoiding several roadies testing the endo function on their sweet cross bikes going down the hill. Made for good entertainment.

K Dizzle you need to work on some low cadence muscle tension stuff IMO. Your cadence was too high on most of the flat stuff, and that is where you were losing ground. You need to shift up a gear and be able to hammer at a slower cadence putting more muscle down. Think about what is going on out there and recognize what your limiters are and work on them in computrainer class.

I don't have much to report, either. I felt like I did awesome both days, and my Crossresults.com scores are significantly lower now because of it. No crashes either day for me, although I had a few avoidance maneuvers for other people's shenanigans. I pre-registered on Tuesday before the race, so was gridded towards the back. My guess is somewhere around 50 to 60. I finished 44th on Saturday, and 33rd on Sunday - which was good enough for 2nd place in Cat 5.

I did a much longer warmup on Sunday, and I think that helped my first lap or two a lot. On Sunday I was passing people in the early stages that I was just catching at the end of the race on Saturday, and I knocked a whole minute off my gap from the leader. On Sunday I had a good fight going with a guy on the last lap. He passed me early in the lap, and then I passed him late. With about 10 corners to go the two jokers in front of us crashed into each other. I was screaming "on your right" as we were closing in. They moved right, but I got around more by pushing them out of the way. The guy I was racing with went left, and one of the two decided to get on his bike and swerve left right into him as I was going by, taking all three of them out. I felt bad because we would have had a good sprint to the finish. And that is Cat4/5

Nice. Yeah I need a longer warmup too. If I go out there without a decent warmup I blow up right after the start. You ordered $2K wheels? Damn you are super serious!

His kit is hilarious. I was with a buddy at the race standing near the barriers, and Sean came through and my buddy said "look at this guy and his retarded outfit" and I'm like "Hey, I know that retard! Go Sean!"
