Davenport Antique Meet

The Antique Motorcycle Club of America's annual National meet & show in Davenport Iowa gets underway tomorrow (Thursday 9/2). It's the biggest of the AMCA national meets and includes a full program of Antique and vintage flat track races on Friday night, a swap meet where almost any kind of antique motorcycle or parts can be found, especially American & British...World war 1 era, Depression era and immediate post World war 2 era stuff dominates but '50's, '60's and '70's stuff is increasing in availabiliy at Davenport, including far east vintage stuff.
This year's show theme is featuring the Triumph Bonneville.
Friday is the best day overall, with Saturday being an OK day at the swap because everyone is getting ready to pull out to make it down to Springfield for the National flat track races or to head home.
If you have an interest in old bikes...Davenport is a must make event.

"Dirt is for racing on...Asphalt is for getting there" OR "Flat trackers go in deeper and come out harder... OR (With apologies to General MaCarthur) "Old motorcycle racers never die, they just slip off the groove and fade into the dust!

This year's Davenport was great as usual. I was disappointed more Triumph Bonnevilles didn't turn out as they were the featured bike but other than that it was great weather except for Thursday's rain and Friday afternoon's cold front that whipped up a strong wind...at least it wasn't gawdawful hot & humid!
I found alot of good stuff in the swapmeet that will be valuable for my many projects and made some great contacts. Got a heads up on some businees that I will need to bone up on and bring up in my capacity of AMA Board member and I attended a Saturday morning seminar put on by Matt Olson about performing and improvising roadside repair on antique and vintage bikes.
Just the atmosphere at this event makes it worth going to. Where else can you see motorcycles that are almost 100 years old that run like the day they left the assembly room where they were put together the first time.
By 2 PM on Saturday I was on my way to Springfield for the national short track and mile but everyone who stayed at Davenport for Saturday nights banquet had the pleasure of hearing Norton Drag Racing superstar of the '70's T.C Christianson speak. T.C and I have become friends in recent years and he is a piece of work. A real character who will have you laughing 'til your sides ache.
As much as I hate to see Davenport come up on the calender because it signals the end of Summer, I'm already looking forward to next year. The featured bike next year will be the HD Sportster and I'm sure it will include all variations including the most successful racing motorcycle of all time the XR 750.
If you have a taste for old bikes or if you want to learn about the history of motorcycling while meeting a whole bunch of those who lived it and made it...You Gotta go to Davenport Iowa!
KBO...Did you make it there?

Sad to say, we missed out. Eldest boy is in marching band and the HS football team had their first home game on Friday night. Saturday, we took all 3 boys down to the Thresher's Reunion in Mt. Pleasant. So I was surrounded by antique machines, just not the "right" ones Par for the course... not enough hours/days to cram it all in. Our buddy Gordy was at the event and posted up some awesome photos on his FB page... I am most envious of both of you!
