Taxing radio stations to play songs

i just heard about this today. The Music Performance Tax bill would require radio stations to pay record labels for the songs they play.

U.S. Representative John Conyers of Michigan is the sponsor of a performance tax bill currently in the house. He says the goal of his legislation is not meant to drive broadcasters into bankruptcy but to ensure that artists get paid their fair compensation. He says that he's willing to work with performance tax opponents to find a middle ground.

The bill has already passed the US Senate and House Judiciary Commitees and is up for debate on the floor when Congress gets back from recess.

They already pay for the license to play them. Double taxation and tax farming FTW...

Isn't this type of over taxation what helped play a part in the downfall of the Roman Empire economy?

Stations, bars, and other public venues pay performance royalities for the recorded music they play through either or both of ASCAP and BMI.

This bill has been cooking for a while. Haven't looked into where the "tax" will go.

The artists would be better off if they had more leverage over their labels, ASCAP and BMI.

ASCAP= American Society of Composers, Authors and Performers
BMI = Broadcast Music, Inc.

Last time I ever really listened to fm radio was back when 94.7 used to play rock music. Once they switched to oldies it was sirius and mp3's from there forward.

don't the labels pay the stations to play certain music as well?
so they pay to play what they are getting paid to play?
that's got a certain ring to it...

sounds like broadcast is having done to it what they did to streaming.. and it almost killed streaming (to be honest we all paid for that one with ads and limits that didn't exist before)

So, if none of it goes to the government, it's not a tax, right? It's just an increase in royalties? Why is the government involved at all in this?
