"DogTown & Z Boys" - GODS!!!!!

Stoked to see this is on Cable now - I have it on my iPad and it is watched on the reg - I grew up wanting to be Tony Alva - Jay Adams was my Hero but Alva was everywhere - Seeing as I had long Blonde hair until I was 10, I NEVER wanted to be like Stacy Peralta - All I wanted to do was skate like Jay Adams and act like Tony Alva - Growing up in CA in the 70s, these guys RULED - I hated that i was 3.5 hours North of where all this went down

Every year, all I wanted to do was go to Venice CA and see the Z Boys from Dog Town - I was the only kid that did not want to go to Disney - I wanted to go to Venice

Funny how this past Christmas, I was at my Moms place and was watching this on my iPad - She walked by and said, "hey those guys were on posters in your room as a kid, what is this?" - Gotta love a 75 year old Italian Woman who is not impressed with an iPad but wants to know about "these Boys" - God Bless 'er.....

Okay, old man rant off

My "God" as a kid (Sound takes a min)

Baddest Man on 4 Wheels and a Deck - Gio, check out 2:06 in

And the Full Film Teaser

I was a skater back in Jr. High/High school, but never knew about these guys until a teacher made us watch this:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0275309/

It was such a cool documentary and I don't even remember the class, but I still remember this movie.

Thats it - They are right when they say they put "Extreme Sports" and 'X Games" on the map

Alva is credited for "birthing" Vert

Have you seen the Lords of the Dogtown movie with Heath Ledger? I thought it was pretty good.

I had the DVD and it was the 1st Movie I put on the iPad - I was just surprised and happy to see it on Cable

Mandy - Saw it in the theaters when it came out - Heath did a GREAT job with that role

Last summer - Kind of sad - Santa Monica (just N of Venice) is creeping into Venice and beginning the gentrification process - Most of the "Dog Town" ways are dieing a slow death - Sad really.....

the doc is good, the narrative was generally panned by the skater community and is quoted in jest.

Jay Adams was out of jail a couple years back and got in some parole violation trouble, not sure if he's back out.

Biniak died last year.

WOW - Duuuude, GREAAAAT read - I wanted to be Jay Adams SOO bad as a kid

Love these quotes of his:

"hopefully, after that Iíd like to bail the USA for awhile Iíd like to spend some time in Indo, or Mexico, and Aus, I think if I ever get to Aus Iíd defect, and never come back. Hawaii is cool, but itís a trip, and Iím over living, and surfing in a crowd, and dealing with all the egos of people trying to build their young crazy reputations. I wanna just cruise, surf, and skate for fun, and enjoy life a lil bit, Iím gonna be 50 years old in February, Iíve been surfing, and skating since I was four years old, and donít plan on stopping anytime soon Iíd just love to get away from all the crazy hustle, and bustle here on the North Shore, for me surfing is about scoring good surf with just a few friends, and having fun."

and of course:

"Thereís nothing to prove anymore so itís all about just being out there, and being a part of it. Iíve seen lots of guys who have a hard time stepping down, and letting the next guys have their time to shine. Iíd say youíre really lucky if you get a turn to be one of the better guys doing what you do whether it be surfing, skating, riding motor bikes, or whatever, but nobodyís turn lasts forever so enjoy it while you can, and never let your ego turn you into something ugly."

But this is Jay Adams to me:

"Itís funny how people have accepted what they think is punk rock, but in reality itís just watered down bubble gum rock. Some of the bands that claim to be punk really make me laugh cuz thereís nothing punk about them, not even their fake-ass Mohawks, or tattoos. For me, punk rock was the attitude we had at the time, we were all pissed off teenagers who didnít want anything to do with what all the older people were telling us what to do. Iím not too sure why we hated hippies, but I think for me it was just hating all the longhaired heavy metals fags that hated us. Being a punk back in the early Ď80′s was dangerous; people would chase you down the street if they caught you alone. That was OK with us cuz weíd catch some of them alone, and theyíd gat a beating. Iíll just sum it up, and say punk rock for us west-coasters was all about violence causing riots, and beating the shit outta people for fun. Itís just part of being young drunk, and pissed off at the world."

Good read! I just recently realized Mike Muir (Suicidal Tendancies) and Jay Muir (Dogtown) were brothers.

Bug, So you seen the concrete skatepark at V.B. or no? My trip to LA last summer inspired me to buy a skateboard . I haven't skated seriously since 91'.

My trip thru LA last summer had me in N SM and S VB and I did not go down by the water so I did not catch that SK8 Park

What kind of board did you buy? - Longboard or Shorty?

I loved hearing reference to my old "Logan Earth Ski" that I saved and saved for as a kid - I was SO fucking proud when I bought that deck

Word - I never could do that shit so I just stuck to what I could do - Cut Backs (and in the olden days) & Slides - I cannot get low like I use to but every now and then I am able to pull something off - I then look around and realize no one saw shit and I die, just a little bit more inside, each time
