A cunt hair

When checking valve clearances and adjusting them I don't think people really realize how small of an adjustment they are making or fretting over. An average cunt hair measures about 0.004 of an inch (4 thousandths).

These are the clearance numbers on the Superhawk

clearances (cold engine)
Intake: 0.16 +/- 0.03mm
exhaust: 0.31 +/- 0.03mm

If my calculations are correct you could fit 40 cunt hairs stacked on top of each other between the cam and valve shim bucket on the intake side of the superhawk.

On the SV the clearance numbres are a little more precise:

Intake: 0.10mm - 0.20mm (0.004" - 0.008")
Exhaust: 0.20mm - 0.30mm (0.008" - 0.012")

So you could fit 1 to 3 cunt hairs in there.

My point is don't fret over a cunt hair adjustment one way or the other.

you're mixing units
more like 1 1/2 +/- 19/64ths of a cunt hair.

actually Nick, those small changes relative to the condition of the valve and seat can change your timing slightly....robbing you of HP.....
Most high performance tuners would agree.
Just because the actual spec # is big doesn't mean a small change will not effect the overall performance. Most of the engines I deal with daily only have a valve clearance of .004". That is way it is so hard to use a compression gage to check. The duration is so short that most gages will not react in time.
Equally as important are the angles of the seat and valve.
..........of course, just an old mans view of the world.......

Cunt Hair - A unit of Measure that means small, but actual Value depends on Application

presion machinist says "I need to shave a cunt hair off this part" .0001 inch
Carpenter Says "I need to bang that stud a cunt hair to the left" .25 inch
Astronmer says That Astroid missed the planet by a cunt hair" 60,000 miles

Understood Butch. But I think you are missing my point. People seem to get all funny about 1 or 2 cunt hairs when they really don't matter too much. If I go in and find one valve a cunt hair too tight I am not going to take out the cams and put new shims in. Not over that small of a measurement

Take the cams out and fix the tight one then check all valves again and you'll find one of the others a cunt hair tight.

Proper clearance assures closure and also smoothly sets the valve back on the seat which helps preserve the valve face.
The cam grind also controls valve closure.

yep, I hear you.
tolerance on the feeler gauge thickness is probably half a mil (.0005").
the tolerance between how two different people use a feeler gauge is probably 10x that amount.

So are you saying the little bit of rust or grease on the feeler gauge might make it not be as accurate? How far off? A cunt hair?

I did the same search and must say, I prefer to use my feeler gauge on valves that are clean and smooth.

nick, allow me to help here if you would. first...you have a cunt hair, and you're
correct on the sizing. BUT!!!! you're forgetting the "blond cunt hair".....which, my good
man is exactly half the size of the normal "cunt hair". there is still a grey(misunderstood)
area on the "red cunt hair". that one will be for another time perhaps.

A "red" cunt hair is 0.005mm or a 1/5 of a thousandths. This is the standard size we use at work.

The valve lash spec, is also just the "set" area of lash that the engine is supposed to go out of the factory with, or when its checked it should be adjusted back to.

What this guarantees, is that when you check the lash at the next 10,000mile interval, the average wear will have not caused an issue. Valves just barely out of spec, will more than likely be just fine at the next check. (especially if they're on the large size).

PSA to all the ladies of the forum:

1) Do Not dye those hairs! It completely alters our precise measurements.

2) Don't freak out when we request a few hairs for later. We're not sickos, we are just running low on hair gauges.

3) Consider helping us, by allowing us access to your friends hairs, especially if theirs are a different color than you own. It is very important to have a wide range of accurate measuring devices.

Thank you for your help in this matter.
