Would you mind sharing your experience, links & advice that could help me simplify the process of choosing a new host and starting a message board?
I'm putting up a personal website pretty soon to share photos and comments among friends and family via a message board. They will need to register, etc. all the normal stuff.
I've been reading and researching hosting companies and message boards... and DAMN there are too many options!
All I need is hosted storage for photos, some game files and misc. stuff, so I DO need a dedicated storage site.
Some sites include a BB... but how good, I'm not sure. Some BB's will host your board on their server and bill you monthly, etc.
Soooo... if you can offer any useful info - I'd REALLY appreciate it!
The host where I have my website, ION WEB, do a search, I do not want to hotlink it, provides a free BB with your site service. It is very affordable and I recomend it for sure.
The free BB's are usaully pretty much bare bones and a pain to work with. Vbulletin is one of the best around which is what we use here. Then you will want a front end for it like our home page, and the photogallery software which I dont use here, its too expensive. As far as a host if your kepping it small mostany of them will work, but once you get over 50 members you will need to move to a host that will start costing some money.
BB softqware tends to be very processor intesive, I remeber we got kicked off verio years ago and wwe only had 100 members at the time.
Not the cheapest, but a great network, great servers, and great support. And I'll set up the board for you. Same one as is used on sport-touring.net. Works great and it's free.
Thanks for your replies... any additional info is welcome!
CLSB and the [H]ardforum (geek stuff @ hardocp.com) are two of my favorite BB's & they both use vB... I had looked at vB's site, but I wanted to ask your opinions just in case something better than sliced bread had been invented and I hadn't heard about it yet...
As far as hosting - I re-visited the vBulletin site & checked out their forums (duh)!
Your blog would be great, because it would probably be mostly about politics and your views. I write about movies, or topics that I am interested on. Here you can express your opinion, and it is discussed. In a blog, you can pretty much be as radical as you want, is yours.

I think that a private blog on my harddrive would kick ass!
It seems like it would be easier to collect and organize and update all the stuff I am into... I got movie /music lists, RC plane RC 4x4's, all my REAL 4x4 stuff, street / dirt bike stuff, mods and other products I want + audio info I've collected... tons of pics...
It would be great having LINKS to all of them from a "master" list, instead of trying to drill through all of my folders and subs... thinking "I know it's here somewhere... "
I really don't know if this would be the software for a "MasterMind" system for my PC / folder / pics+ organizing lists and stuff but I am looking for software like that...
I tried MS OneNote at the store once... I liked it a LOT... but need more time to check it out... The academic version is cheap...
Can I borrow someones student ID? Hehehehe....
But really, if I knew it was what I need - I'd be HAPPY to buy it!
