rented out in Cali cuz I was only there for a year. Moved back and bought a house here.

It's a buyers market now so I suggest if anyone is considering owning to take the plunge! It's worth it

I voted own because we will be buying the house we live in within the next month. I am also afraid of taxes, the house was my grandmas so she had the taxes frozen at $1200/year. Once it's in our name I'm expecting them to go up to around 5 or $6000. We're in Chicago, double lot, no idea how many sq ft the house is.

If I had known 6 years ago that I would be staying here so long, I would have bought. I kept saying "this is my last year" so it never made sense to buy. The upside is rent here is cheap. Brand new place, 650 sqft + garage is only $600.

I will be buying in december when we move.....unless we move back to chicago and then it's anybody's guess. Maybe I'll send the folks to a nursing home and take over their little place on the pond.

why do you think I dont complain? I know where my taxes go. If anything I want to complain about mismanagement of them, but not the amount itself.

I don't mind either. Cost of living in America.

Besides, where would the DOD get the $$ for our little skirmishes around the globe without income taxes?

i own. i once added up all the money i spent on rent over the course of 10 years. it was nausiating.

within the coming months, i really think we're going to see home prices drop dramatically as sellers realize they can't command the same numbers they did a few years ago. should be interesting to say the least.

on that note, i gotta throw in some shameless self promotion...i'm licensed agent in IL, so if anyone needs help buying or selling a home, please give me a shout.

What are the specs on your pad Bug. Location, square footage? I'm sorta looken for a 800-1k square foot place, rehab, has to have AC of course, 1br 1 bath anywhere on the northside of the city... preferably in the hotspots, wicker, lincoln park. Crap is way over priced... a decent 1br 1bath runs 240k plus nowadays.

Friend of mine has a nice (vintage) 1 br in Evanston for sale... asking $190k.

As for the original question... "Yes". Renter until 8/31 then a homeowner. Taxes will be high but the schools are great and so is the police force (good for resale time!)
