Was motorcycle awareness a part of your driver's ed curriculum?

In light of Sloroll's recent losses among his friends, I'm wondering if motorcycle/biker awareness is a part of driver's ed curricula, as it was a part of ours at my high school.

In my class, a biker from ABATE came in and gave an unforgettable lecture about the importance of motorists looking for motorcycles when they're in their cars. I remember him showing us his RIP patches and talking about the buddies he lost, their families, etc. and exactly how they died. I never forgot it, and it made a real impression on me when I finally got my license to drive a car. Of course, now that I ride a motorcycle, I especially appreciate this and hope that this is still taking place in a widespread fashion in Driver's Education.

How many of you had someone from ABATE or any other biker-advocacy group come in and talk to you about looking for motorcycles?

ABATE Time.

I didn't even know that was being done. Hell, if I could, I would volunteer to speak at a class. I'm not expert but I can learn what's what and being a rider, I think I would be off to a good start of preventative accidents/deaths of motorcyclists.

Life's Journey Is Not To Arrive At The Grave Safely In A Well Preserved Body, But Rather To Skid In Sideways, Totally Worn Out, Shouting "HOLY SHIT... What A Ride!"

All you have to do is follow three simple rules. One, never under estimate your opponent (mentality). Expect the unexpected (could work out in your favor). Two, take it outside(or to a table). Never start anything inside the Bar unless it's absolutely necessary. And three, be nice.

Driver's Ed was 14 years ago.... as I think back through the mists of my memory I must say that I don't remember it at all.

I think this should be required instruction.

Unless you ride, how are you going to be aware of how invisible bikes can become to motorists?

How many times have you heard the sound of a motorcyle and were then extra attentive while driving or made sure to look extra carefully? Do you think the average driver does this? Not unless they ride.

I really think a difference can be made in decreasing motorcycle fatalities if we increased awareness among motorists.

No matter what you do some people just won't be helped.

While shopping over the weekend my wife was struck by a lady pushing a shopping cart around in the store, while on her cell phone. This lady can't push a cart and talk at the same time, let alone drive?

I think this is a great thing for driver ed classes to do. Although my HS driver ed class did not have ABATE or MSF come out. They didn't even mention motorcycle stuff.

I remember some 45-50 year old Harley guy came in and talked to us, it was more about the scars he got from burning his leg on the tail pipe from his Hog when he didn't wear jeans. He even stuck his leg on the desk Captain Morgan style and showed us all the scar from on his inner calf. Oh yeah I learned a lot about safety.

Nope.

I would prefer to see the MSF do this rather then ABATE, but I guess something is better than nothing.

But I think it is up to the school to ask them to come.

Here is an example from the MSF:

1980... my driver ed teacher was too busy standing behind me, looking down my cleavage to talk about motorcycles (or much else, for that matter). I'd show up in short skirts, stockings and heels just to torture the poor sob.

He did ask me once to please not park my car right in front of the building when I showed up for class tho.

Yeah, this is one of the things ABATE does that nobody seems to focus on. I wish more people would take the time to get involved (the challenge is finding folks who are available during the day to visit the schools).

9 years ago and no mention. England has some pretty good PSA's on the topic... Really something I wish they would start here.

One had a bunch of bikers riding completely naked then said "what will it take for you to see bikers?"
Another had a biker wlking through a busy sidewalk into everyone else (hard, knocking people over) and said "what if bikers stopped seeing people"
The last one I remember is kinda like the Allstate commecials where the camera's in a car and the car pulls out in front of a bike.

Nothing in my class back then. It pretty much looked like motorcycles didn't exist. I agree that videos like these would be one of the best ways to educate people. Another thing I've noticed is that some drivers are just shitty. These people are hitting other 3 ton + cars regularly, so asking them to watch out for a bike is just about impossible.
