Are you a member of the AMA?

No matter what the answer is please explain why. Personally, I think the 39 dollars is a spit in the bucket. Especially considering what the AMA is about and what they do for us as motorcyclist every day.

AMA Mission Statement:

The mission of the American Motorcyclist Association is to serve the interests of motorcyclists by pursuing, promoting and protecting the future of motorcycling.

About the AMA and the website link. Seriously consider paying your dues if you are as avid about motorcycles as many of you claim you are.

Nope, until I see Motorcycle support groups....AMA, ABATE, etc.....actively pushing for gear laws in all states(notice I said "gear", not only helmets, proper attire, boots, gloves, pants and jackets)...I doubt I will join them. Hard to get support from the non-riding public or the government when all they see are pirates or squids, then read about the alarming death rates for motorcyclists in the last 5 years.

Sometimes goodbye is your second chance.

You talk about the gear thing but that is not the only thing they do.
Increased penalties for right of way violations that result in an injury or death, committed buy cars.
Fighting against the legislators to prevent new laws, and keep the areas available for dirt bikes.

Rick,
I'll bring one of my copies of the AMA magazine sometime if I know you are going to be there and I will be too. AMA does a lot of stuff and well if all you care about is gear then you may loose your right to ride before that happens.

With that new shiny dirtbike of yours you should read the fine print and see all of the crap law makers are trying to pass banning the use of it and where you can ride it. 39 bucks isn't much, and you get a cool magazine in the mail every month covering every form of the sport we love called... "Motorcycling"

good post...I'll be joining after reading how they are trying to overturn CO legislation to fine motorcycles with aftermarket exhaust systems (they must have a factory system). The AMA is taking the stance that you can't single out motorcycles, and if they want this law, they have to do it for all vehicles, so every Midas, Mineke, etc. would not be allowed to install ANY type of aftermarket muffler.

It's more than just lobbying for/against helmet legislation

Look, I can appreciate this. I was young too, I felt just like you. Hated authority, hated all my bosses, thought they were full of shit. Look, it's like they say, if you're not a rebel by the age of 20, you got no heart, but if you haven't turned establishment by 30, you've got no brains. Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?"
