Help save a life.....?

Ok. I don't know how to start a poll. But I have a few questions after hearing something on the radio and thinking about it. Sometimes these questions aren't brought up until someone you know needs help.

We all have this inherently dangerous hobby in common, so............

How many of you are registered organ donors?
Why are you / aren't you?

Me: I haven't signed my license but I have told family I would donate. Though I've heard the stories of hospitals "writing you off" sooner if your listed as a donor, I can't imagine it's true.

How many of you know your blood type?
Me: I do.

How many of you give blood?
If you don't for something other than a health reason, why?

Me: I think I've done it once or twice. I don't know why I don't do it more. I guess it's just not something I thought about doing much till today.

How many of you are bone marrow typed?
I hear it can be done with a simple swab and the process is painless for testing and giving marrow.

If you happened to match someone for bone marrow, which I hear is very rare, should you be contacted, would you donate yours to help save someone else? It's anonymous and you wouldn't know who you helped or if you saved them till a year later if ever.

Why did this get me thinking so much today? I personally have a dialated pupil. Meaning one pupil is always large then the other. Typically this is a sign of severe head injury. I'm "supposed" to wear a medic alert bracelet. But how uncool is that? I know. I know. I do however have a medic alert charm (the little plate that would be on the bracelet) on my bike key chain. It states my situation and my blood type. Fortunately for me, it's already done it's job once in my life. I typically ride only on the track. The people I normally go to the track with are aware of my condition. I've also had Dean at DC Decals and a site sponsor, make medic alert symbols for me. I have one on top of my tank in clear view. I also have one that I need to put on my helmet.

We can't control everything in life. Even though it's winter and we probably aren't riding much. Everyone be safe this Holiday Season. Make smart decisions. We're a close community here so lets do all we can to watch out for each other.

On the bar right below where the "post reply" button (top) there is a button that reads "Thread Tools", that is how you turn this into a poll. I found this out about a month ago.

I am an organ donor, I know my blood type, I do not donate blood anymore, funny story there, I will tell it when I'm less tired. I had not heard about the bone marrow before though, I should get on that.

Yes:

Organ Donor
Body Donor
Know Blood Type
Blood Donor (need to do that again soon)

Why?

Because that stuff is useless to me after I am dead and could help someone else.

I'm not a donor for personal preferences.
I don't remember my blood type.
I can't give blood any more but would love to. They will not take my blood because I was born and lived in England for more than 6 months during the Mad Cow Disease scare.

Namaste

To the times I'll never remember, with the friends I'll never forget.

Yes for organ donor
Don't know my blood type

why?

Just like wink said once I'm dead I have no use for my parts anymore. Might as well give them to people that could use them.

I am a donor signed card and everything organs only
A- Couldn't forget that one if I wanted to because of my blood type lifesource makes sure I don't forget how rare it is.
I donate whenever I haven't had a tattoo for a year....Next donation is in march. I believe my next donation will put me at over 2 gallons donated. When available I donate double red blood cells using the special machine.
I didn't know about the bone marrow thing so if you have some more info about that I would be interested. and yes I would donate if I matched someone.

No, for the sole reason of being 'written off.'

Nope.

Yes. At work, every year.

Yup, Yup, Yup and Yup.

As someone said, it's useless to me when I'm gone and my body can make more of what's donated now. I'm a regular at Heartland Blood Center in Naperville. In fact, for our anniversary this year my wife and I both donated on the same day. The metaphor was too classic to pass up

I'm an organ donor. I don't know my blood type, have never donated blood. They can have anything they want, but only once I'm done with it.

Yes to all, but cannot donate blood. I get tattooed quite a bit, and they will not accept anyone that has been tattooed within 6 months.

Burntrash cannot because of his love of gay sex.

Organ and body donor, A-, was going to do the bone marrow type thing, but just forgot about it. If I was a match, I'd do it without hesitation. Used to give blood a lot, should start doing it again.

How many of you are registered organ donors?

Not one, but couldn't care less what happens to my body when I die. I am however not going to sign off on it.

How many of you know your blood type?

Did know, can't remember.

How many of you give blood?

Never have, but the situation has never arisen. I prefer to be spur of the moment, no issues at all with giving over a pint or two.

How many of you are bone marrow typed?

I haven't, and I haven't looked into how it's done.

If you happened to match someone for bone marrow, which I hear is very rare, should you be contacted, would you donate yours to help save someone else?

Depends on my schedule.

Why did this get me thinking so much today?

Because you're weird

Organ donor-of course! No brainer for me as a medical professional.

Blood donor-couple of times a year, could do more but I forget.

Blood type- doesn't matter if you know or not.
if you're bleeding out, you'll get O negative until the hospital's
blood bank will match your blood type to the sample they collect.

Bone marrow- not yet but plan to get on it

NO, they will NOT "write you off" ,steal your organs or any other such thing.
That is an urban legend.

Blood donor-yes.....I can't believe people don't know their blood type.

Organ Donor: Yes
Blood Donor: Would love to, but can't because I've lived in too many malaria infested places (Africa, India, etc...) Have to stay put in this country for 3 years in a row before being allowed to donate, but that never happens...
Blood Type: Universal Donor! (but can't donate, oh the irony)
Bone Marrow: Nope, cause probably same reason as above

The whole 'write you off' thing if you're a donor is great for TV shows, but there's too much liability in the real world for Doctors to be messing with that. If they didn't do all that they could, I'm sure there'd be repercussions later.

Donor - Yes
Blood Type - Don't know, don't care
Donate blood - Every once in a while
Marrow - Don't remember

I was told years ago that donating bone marrow was extremely painful. Back in high school my grandma had cancer and there was a possibility that she would need a bone marrow transplant, so my entire family got tested. I was told it was a really painful procedure, but didn't care. Unfortunately, I wasn't a match.
