Office Politics

Anybody play into it? If somebody asked you to join a company softball team, bowling team, or any after business hour event would you do it? Just curious what your responses would be.

Office politics are considered bowling or softball with your co-workers??? You guys must be old... I interviewed with Facebook and they even give you a rent allowance if you live close to work, just to keep a close knit community and work environment.

Softball and bowling are just examples. But yes, anything related to being with coworkers in a non-work related setting.

i wouldn't consider that stuff office politics. I personally always say yes to stuff like that. Good for the career and it makes you better friends with your co-workers. I don't see a reason why you would say no, except for scheduling reasons or prior engagements????

Some people wouldn't consider it office politics but some would. If a VP was part of that team and you were trying to schmooze your way up the corporate ladder than that would probably be considered office politics...or kissing ass.

I get drunk every weekend with my fellow workers. Well, a certain number of them, some are too old for our activities.

It is worth it unless they'll stab you in the back. If there ever happens to be a problem, the ones you hang and play with will stick up for you if it comes down to it.

It may be different for you but I know the guys I work with will probably take a bullet for me, and if not, I will shoot them myself.

I have an open spot on Wednesdays so I've joined the Softball team. I'm starting to think they should have started a Basketball team instead.

+1 on that... My old co-workers always used to hang out at my last job. They would always ask me and I would tell them I spend the better part of my day with them. I am going home and spending whats left of my day with my family.

If it's that bad, just bring a couple pints of Jim Beam with you or Jager. That'll make it a little more fun.

I like riding to the office, the games are on Wednesdays before Portillos, and there are some twisties out near the field. Booze is not an option

Definitely a good idea to join the company events. Gives you a chance to rub elbows with people higher on the chart or from a different department. Gives you a better understanding of the big picture.

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."

I always had the guy that didn't drink pick me up, then I would proceed to get totally smashed, and try to play softball. We brought a keg every to every game last season, except for 2 or 3, they were on weeknights.

I suppose that depends on your job and your co-workers...

For me, the job is a lifestyle. We're all close-knit community. Now, if there is a chance I can whoop the shit out of one of my superiors (specially those who I don't like) I'm all over that

schmoozing your way up is a part of business. If you think you will do well and get promoted based only on your job performance....you're sorely mistaken
