Should We Eliminate the Rep System?

I can see the purpose when we get a real jerk in here, and sometimes it is useful. But does anyone else think we should get rid of it?

I think it was brought into place for a good cause, but has gotten out of hand. Guilty as charged.

Thoughts? Comments? Neg rep?

I think we should make it visible when someone gives rep for a particular post and maybe the "Walks on water" thing should be changed since 99% of the board is at that ranking as of now. Even newbs get that title after just one positive rep from someone who has been here for more than 3 months.

I don't even know what the purpose is behind it. I don't give it, care if I get it, or look at it very often. Or even how it works. It does make this board different from other ones though, whether that is good or bad.

I like the Rep system I just think some people "cough" are a little to quick on giving rep without thinking it through a little and what thread it might be.

yeah. +1 there.

Maybe a more stringent guideline about giving rep would be in order as well. It seems like rep is pretty much handed out for mere zings. I'd like to see rep used as a feedback mechanism indicating knowledge and helpfulness so that the people who know their shit and give good advice are recognized. Sadly, we have a lot of members who are extremely knowledgeable and super-helpful in their posts, but languish well below the one-line masters in the rep standing.

So, you've voting for more central authority, control and intrusion into people's free will to dole out reps?

Damn, and I had you pegged as a Republican.

Erroneous! (and I'm not a Republican. My voter's card says libertarian, and the modern day GOP leaves me uninspired and unimpressed, quite honestly)

This is a self regulating community. What I suggest carries absolutely no enforcement power. Just a suggestion that people should consider when handing out rep. As it stands, the general more in the community is to hand out green dots for zingers. Maybe thats a social more we should endeavor to change. Like I mentioned before, personal ethics and standards need not be centralized ones.

Or maybe have a 2-tiered rep system. Zinger Rep and knowledge/helpfulness rep.

Keep the rep +1 on adding more levels --- also, is there a seller feedback rating system? another board I'm on uses iTrader so we can give 'rep' to others we buy and sell between, like the feedback in ebay.

I've been saying this for ages. Otherwise it is fine as it is.
