Are you a low baller?

Simple question - Are you a low baller? Do you do it to get a better price? To let a seller know he is trying to get too much? For humor by low balling the shit out of Chicago Performance on craigslist?

I don't lowball. If someone's not asking a fair price to begin with, I don't want to deal with them.

I usually offer 25% less than asked for. Let the haggling begin from there. If I think it is a fair price, then I just pay it.

If someone has "Firm" next to the price, I ether pay it or walk away.

How do you determine what a fair price is? In this crappy economy, getting what you (as a seller) might consider a fair price can in actuality be a very low price due to people trying to watch their cash flow. From the other perspective, you (as the buyer) offering a fair price could be considerably lower than what it would be in a stable economy.

It's simple: Fair = what I would be willing to pay for X Y or Z. It has nothing to do with the seller, it has to do with the item and what it is or is not worth to me. If I determine it's worth X and they are asking 2X, then buh bye, I will look elsewhere. I'll find it. I don't care to insult someone with a lowball and if they asked too much to begin with, too bad... let it flap in the wind.

The reason I even posted this up is because of stuff I've been buying in the off season - particularly a power commander. These things cost $360 (retail) new. I found a guy selling a used unit for $175 plus shipping and paypal fees. I think that probably would have come out in the $185-190 area. I offered what I considered a fair price of $150 and he was not too happy with me and provided me with some choice words.

2 days later, I saw a guy who wanted $150 for his. While I thought this was a reasonable price, I still tried to get a better price. I offered $125 and got it. Seller was happy, I was happy. I'd consider that a reasonable lowball, and if he would have turned me down, I still would have paid $150 for it. If I have a chance at saving a few bucks, might as well try, right?

PR,

It's a matter of what a buyer/seller is willing to accept as 'negotiable'. If you like to exert the time and energy into tipping the scale to your advantage, then go for it. Someone sellers may be receptive to it... some may not. We all go with our own comfort level and what we are willing to put up with.

Bingo. If I am selling something, I add at least 10% to what I need, just for haggle purposes. If they dont haggle, then bonus for me.
If I put firm, then that is what the price is.

Bahaha this thread will rule. If I am offered a fair price for something I am buying or selling then I take it. If it's close to fair you discuss it further. If it's so far out of the ballpark I tell them they are fucking retarded. That's how I roll.

This is pretty much my strategy. I get sick of posting stuff on Craigslist to have people offer me next to nothing. If I'm in a good mood, I just ignore the email, any other mood, I have some fun

By the way Chicago Performance, I got $8.39 for one of the jackets in your store. Figure it's $8.39 more than you normally get for them

I agree with sqrly. I might go even less if I think the seller marked it up a bit or charges unreasonable shipping.
