isnt that the SR22 blackbird? it does like 3 times the speed of sound? also leaks fuel like a siv until it is going over mach 1. That this is such a pretty plane.

is it true that thing takes so long to turn around it pretty much covers a couple hundred miles to do a U turn? because it is so fast and non maneuverable?

Yes, this is true. While on the ground the plane leaks it's fuel. As the plane takes off and flies, the SR's exterior starts to expand from heat that is generated from the drag of the Earth's atmosphere. The plane leaks so much fuel, that the SR has to refuel in mid-air, before it begins it's mission.

Also, I do seem to recall that the SR's turn radius is around 300 miles or somewhere in that ballpark.

The picture is actually the SR-71B Trainer. Look at the rear cockpit, it sits above the fuselage. This model is used to train pilots to fly the SR-71A.

Interesting historical fact: The plane was originally called the RS-71A, but when the President unvieled it he mis-read the card and called it the SR-71A. No one corrected him and the designation stuck.
