Launch practice?

I've never been to the drag strip, but I'd like to go to work on starts. What the deal on getting some time on the strip? Cost? Open practice times? When is the the best time to go?

I think Rt 66 still has test and tune on Tuesdays... I believe it's $25.

http://www.chicagolandspeedway.com/c...=Test+%26+Tune

If you're just practicing launches (not full runs) I'd go with Dave's idea.

Namaste

66 is such a pain in the ass, it's not worth the hassle. Go to Byron if you really want to go.

rob...you can do it on the street...its no big deal....just fine that perfect spot when ya launch so the front tire doesnt lift too much on ya as it causes your control of the bike to go down...

and that video, you can plainly hear the bike is on a air clutch and shifts its self the whole time...he didnt have the tether to shut the bike down when he fell off the bike and you can still hear it going and shifting on its own...

depending on where ya live...if ya really want to do it on a track i would suggest
byron: http://www.byrondragway.com/Schedule.html
or gld (great lakes dragway) http://www.greatlakesdragaway.com/in...?page=schedule

what ya want to stay away from are national events or club events as they take up the entire day...i went to byron yesterday and a bunch of monkeys that didnt have decent cars kept cause spills and issues on the track taking forever between runs...from 12:15 until 1:45, there was morons getting shit all over the track and thats what kills the times between rounds of racing...

usually the cost is 25 bucks for a t&t (test and tune) all day and as many runs you can get in before they close for the night or you get tired...from 10:30 until 2:30 yesterday, i got 5 runs in...if i could have handled the heat for longer, i would have stayed and prolly have gotten 10 runs at least...

...plus my gf was with me saying "omg slow down, slow down" and I was thinking "Lose annoying squalk box in passenger seat, afford more mods and have less weight in the car and on the back of the bike"...so i dumped her and I'm single again as usual...HERE KITTY KITTY!!!

Union grove is still my favorite. hit a test ant une night and have fun, it's a blast

pay close attention to your 60 foot times and reaction time, thats what will improve as your launch's get better. Also if a snow mobile lines up next to you, dont under estimate it, I got spanked by one my first night out

HDTony.... Damn glad to meet you!

RT doesn't factor in to the ET...you're better off sitting and waiting to go until you feel comfortable. I do it all the time, I don't want to risk something else coming into my lane and killing me.

i feel the best bet is us41 on bikes. you can make as many passes as you want and dont have to wait in line long...depending on the day you go. friday nights are usually great nights to get in a lot of laps.

20. Rickey Gadson
DON'T LAUNCH AT REDLINE

And so it ends—at the beginning. Watch the start of any roadrace and you’ll likely see 30 riders doing it wrong. I know—I was one of them. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that Pro dragracer Rickey Gadson set me straight. Most roadracers hold their engines at or near redline and then dump the clutch, resulting in a wild wheelie, a squawking clutch or both. Rickey does it differently: He holds engine revs at peak torque, not peak horsepower, lets out the clutch quickly and then pins the throttle. His launches are unspectacular affairs, the only excitement the howl of the rear tire—and the killer 60-foot time he just laid down. Believe me, you wouldn’t want to race him for pinks! -MC
