Gearing

I have a 1992 Yamaha XJ600S and i wanted to put some gears on it to give me more torque. I was going to drop down one tooth on the front sprocket but i am not sure what i want to do anymore and i dont think that'll give me the torque im looking for any suggestions would be great.

Are you asking so you can stunt a seca? That might actually be pretty fun to see.

I dont know how changing gears would work for you, your engine is going to run at a higher rpm and you might run into overheating issues since its are cooled. But if thats not a problem then you will get better mechanical advantage by either going down in the front or up in the rear or both.

This is a cash and carry world - pay as you go
sometimes you only have to pay a little, mostly it's alot, once in a while it's all you have.

try dropping one in the front. This is roughly the equivalent of going up 2.5 in the rear. If you do the rear instead, two things to consider, 1) it is the more expensive of the two to purchase, and 2)you may need to get a new chain as there will be a larger sprocket to go around.
I have tried various different gearing combinations on several of my bikes and IMO dropping one up front is good start to gear changes.

for a seca..i would suggest -1 in the front +2 in the rear...that will bring that bitch up!

Usually going -1 front and +2 rear you get to keep the chain so that will save you some money right there.


I'm sick of following my dreams. I'm just going to ask them where they're goin', and hook up with them later!!

There is an article in this months issue of S3 about gearing. It explains the whole ratio thing pretty well. I don't know if you have a subscription to it, but if not, I could probably scan the article and email it to you if you want.

Ya guys say he could keep the ol' chain if he goes -1+2... whatabout the fact that the chain is worn in to the old sprockets. I remember that issue last season on this board, and bunch of people said that if you change the sprockets, ya should change the chain as well.

I just did little somethin' to my bike. I converted it from 530 to 520, with +2 in the back ,with a pimp D.I.D. erv2 gold chain

Noticeable get go, can't tell about top speed, since my speedo is all messed up. Oh yeah, keep that in mind too, might wanna look for a yellow box

(still can't wheelie worth crap )

well i ordered my sprockets last night from sprocket center. I went down one in the front and up one in the rear. I also ordered an x ring chain cuz the guy recommended that so i just went for it. Its only money ya know! But anyway ill keep yall posted to let ya know how the results are

Got my sprockets today finally along with a chain breaker that i ordered from the MAC Tools guy at work. There is a definate increase in acceleration. I really havnt gotten a chance to test them out because it was about 29 degrees out. Tomorrow should be alot better and a bit warmer plus its my day off so ill be sure to test them out.
