Naperville Red Light Camera Question

So I ended up with a red light ticket recently for turning right on N Aurora going North on 59. My wife was driving and she stopped before turning right but she did it after the line past the camera's view. Has anyone been successful by challenging the light in Naper? There is no sign which states you cannot make a right on Red either.

a very timely article. it states that the cameras aren't supposed to be that sensitive, maybe something to go on?

Watch the video of the incident and see if the law was technically violated. If it was, just pay it. If it was not then choose the administrative hearing option and go from there.

If she stopped past the line you are screwed. They are using that to make a ton of money with the cameras. They say if you didn't stop before the line then you entered the intersection without stopping first and violated the law. It's a bunch of BS, but very few are beating these tickets.

'Naperville's cameras, for example, do not ticket for "slow roll" violations, in which drivers may pause and look before proceeding on a right turn. Stopping over the line is also not ticketed. '

I find that hard to believe since that's what most of them catch people for.

Most people don't realize you're supposed to stop BEHIND the line, and the line is there to protect pedestrians coming off the sidewalk...that's why the lines are so far back, because they have to be behind the sidewalk.

Also so big rigs have room to make the turn. That shit pisses me off when people stop right at the center divider.

Napervilles cameras are very forgiving. Stopping past the line or on the crosswalk (no peds present) they will let slide most of the time. Slo roll will get a ticket, must stop completely. Also the entire turn is in the cameras view. If you can view the video do so, if not better to just pay it (less headaches and cheaper)

That's what the article said. I'm saying, if that's the city's stance, you could use it to fight the ticket.

I heard on the news this morning that they might pass a bill banning red light cameras except in construction and I think school zones. The reason for this is that they believe that municipalities are doing this for the sole purpose of generating revenue and not for public safety.

I hope they pass it because I just paid $100 for a bullshit red light ticket I got in Rolling Meadows. I almost wanted to write FUCK YOU on the envelope before I mailed it out but decided not to.

I did get to watch the video and she did slowly rolled and then stopped by it was after the point where the camera does not capture. Those who are familiar with that intersection by Delta Sonic. When you are making a right and even if you do roll past the line there is a median on the left that prevents you from going into the traffic lane. The ticket is $100 which I think is pretty steep for small infraction like this. I guess I will fight it and see what happens.

Yep, turning right from WB North Aurora onto NB IL-59 there is a median that separates the very end of the turn lane from the lanes that go straight.

I read the government report on it a couple years ago. I don't remember the exact numbers but the over all number of accidents significantly increase at intersections with red light cameras was one of the findings. However, the number of accidents with severe injury was also down. The report was inconclusive as to if the cameras were a good safety feature or not IIRC.

I think I read that report, or one similar. The difference being that it was more so focused on running the red/yellow light straight through the intersection. People were panic stopping when they realized they were about to give themselves a ticket with something they do at every other light (blow through a yellow/red).

I think the cameras in our areas are more focussed on turn lanes rather than straight through.

I'm not sure if that's a huge difference, just something I thought I'd point out.

Edited original to show what you said, and my interpretation on what it Should have said

fear does not mean we should submit to someone that desires to be reckless.

Just because a person that wants to slip thru a yellow does not mean that we should remove a method of punishment because those idiots slam on their brakes at the last second and the person behind them wasnt paying attention and slams into them.
that would be idiot 2

I drive quite a bit for my job and have had zero issues complying with the simple task of, "stopping at, or before the line", I learned when I was 16.

I dont see how you guys have any right to complain about them unless you;

a. are person #1 trying to run a yellow-orange light and was going too fast.
b. are person #2 not paying attention and neglecting following distance and slam into person #1 when person #1 slams on their brakes.

Then you become c, person #3 that gets high off their own farts and think they are doing nothing wrong and the cops are to blame. (law enforcement in general)
so how many people complain about causing an accident because they saw a cop close by? or because they were near a police station.

I got 1 of these recently in another town. I reviewed the online vid. My belief is that no cop would written a ticket for what I did. I don't think I would have even been stopped for it. How is it not a conflict of interest when the reveiwers are the company that gets a part of the revenue generated?

Today I was waiting at a stop light when a state trooper pulled next to me, and stopped with 1/2 of his car past the line. I tried to get my phone to snap a pic, but the light changed before I could. That would be my defense....I drive like the state police.

I don't want to get rear-ended. Seen it happen a LOT on RT. 83. Bad stuff. But anyway - as long as its yellow when you are entering in the intersection - you're good. Don't slam on your brakes on a yellow light. cruise through. I confirmed with our fellow boys in blue on this one. And now I just keep on truckin. (Stop only if I see a red, or know it will turn red before I get into that intersection.)
