Speeding fines going up in Illinois

I don't know about the other states, but in Illinois, speeding fines are increasing. I've got one question, "Who is responsible and when are they up for reelection?"

Election:
November 2, 2010. In most counties, you must be registered to vote at least one month before the election, or by/on October 1, 2010.

Responsible Parties:
The Legislature (Illinois House and Illinois Senate - they write and pass laws) and the Governor (signs bills that the Legislature passes, thus making them law).

Of course, if you think that throwing these bums out and getting the other guys in will make speeding fines go down, you are delusional.

Craig

Raising the fines 60% is insane. Especially at a time where people are having a hard time paying their mortgage or putting food on the table!

Just goes to prove what I have been saying all along, tickets are just a form of tax.

Do it enough times and they will have to pay attention. The trick is to get it done the first time. In Chicago after Bilandic, snow removal became how important to politicians?

Yeah, everyone "speeds" every day. The damn law is so subjective, speed limits so varied (intentionally to create speed trap zones) and a law that was initially designed for safety is now being used as a form of revenue...just like the stepped up DUI enforcement. Tax behind the veil of safety.

I never got a speeding ticket in my life, got 2 in the last year. I didn't change the way I drive at all, they just stepped up enforcement.

Tony is spot on, the State is broke, so they're taking it out of our pockets, just like we knew they would. How many pensions are some of these fools collecting on?

I had a State Cop barge his way in to traffic from an on ramp in front of us Yesterday on 55, blow past everyone at probably 80, IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE, then about 5 miles down the road, he's pulled over with his lights on, kicking a few scraps of truck retread off the road.

They sure like to enforce their rules, but they really don't care to play by them.

The video points out that speed limits in many places are well below the "median speed".

It's a foolish waste of our collective time as are toll booths and traffic jams.

While I believe speed laws *can* generally be good guidance for safe motoring....
I believe that most speed laws today are aimed at revenue generation rather than
a real attempt at public safety.

I think there should be "real" speed limits...... and those should be obeyed / enforced.

Don't even get me started on legal lane useage.

But that's not really the point...speed limits of 55 on 294 and 355 for example are aimed SQUARELY at revenue generation. Both highways are designed for 70mph...when such things are designed that way you naturally move towards that design speed. ...meaning you actually have to really try and not speed! It's that sort of nonsensical implementation of the law that ticks myself and most other people off

You shouldn't have to drive in constant fear of being pulled over for speeding whilst moving along with the flow of traffic and not causing any sort of *danger* on the roadway whatsoever.

I really hope that my gut feeling is right on that sort of crap Tom, in that I can't see it being implemented because people don't want to be hawked like that. I just hope they/we won't stand for it.

As much as y'all hate lawyers, they're who is keeping this down. The plaintiffs bar would bleed dry whomever designed and implemented it, filing products liability claims for any and every accident involved a so-equipped vehicle.
