activating green lights

well it's not a traffic violation I've had to deal with yet but always something I've wondered; is there a special loophole for bikes when we're sitting in a left turn lane and can't trigger the light for multiple cycles? After 2 without a green can we just "proceed with caution" or would we still end up getting shafted? And if there is no loophole how do the rest of you deal with it? It's happened a couple times when I was out with my dad and our bikes together couldn't trigger a left on green only light so we made a right then turned around, there just has to be a better way. Yes I realize Cook County is overly oppressive and might castrate you on the spot for making the turn but it was worth a question.

Not sure about IL, but in WI if you sit through 3 cycles without getting a gree, you are permitted to treat it like a malfunctioning light and proceed like it was a stop sign.

If I can see the outline of the sensor, I put the bike right on one of the lines, seems to change. If it goes past one cycle and I didnt get a green signal, I blow it (if there is no traffic).

You have to stop on top of the outline to trigger the light.

If it doesn't trigger the first time, I'll sit through red and then turn when safe.

There is one light by the MSF course at COD that will not trigger no matter what. We've had 3 bikes on the sensor and it still wouldn't change.

that's the article I read that got me thinking about how to handle it.

it's situations like Jim's, where it just won't change, is there any legal way to make a left or some tips you guys have besides a right and a u-turn?

I just go through it after waiting a couple of cycles. If you're lucky, a car will come up behind you and set it off. A U turn is still illegal anyway.

Just wait, proceed with caution, use the previuosly posted statement from Wis.. it is all about your demeanor if being pulled over... Roll the dice...

if your attitude is good and you are fluent with the explanation you may not be hasseled.. good luck, i do it all the time as the light coming out of my neighborhood, is just like the on by COD....

is there any legal protection to "reasonable amount of time" or do you just hope if you get caught the cop isn't a dick and let's it go? I just don't want to have to come back to this forum after actually getting a ticket.

You hope that the cop isn't a dick. At MSF we teach that you wait at least two turns and if not proceed with caution. However, as others pointed out you are better off and safer doing 3 right or a right and u-turn. But then again you better know how to make a u-turn Properly executed u-turn should buy you a few cool points if a cop is watching.

You mean the burnout U-Turn right?

I saw a couple of Meade guys working on one of those lights in Niles one day and they had a laser type gun that was setting it off, I thought about taking it from him and running ! Just thinking of how wonderful it would be to have one.

NESBA - Seems to be missing, can someone direct me where to find it?

Here in TX the Uturn is legal, but I still prefer to blow the light (when safe) because here's the thing-- if it's a busy intersection, someone will come up behind you. If it's so deserted that no one is coming up behind you, is it really safe (esp. for a woman) to be sitting there alone for all that time??

I guess each instance dictates what you can and can not do; however I tend to be of the opinion "I waited safely and legally for many iterations of the light and now it is no longer safe for me to sit here alone so I turned when safe." And the positive side of me can't really imagine a police officer or judge who would oppose that point and if they did, oh well.

Anyone know what the law in IL is? I was wondering this myself. I was on Grand and Huntclub and I was on the square outline and after it didn't change I moved back and forward on the line and it didn't change. I sat there for 3 light cycles and just went, the roads were clear cause it was 2am (during the summer). So I just turned when no cars were in sight.
