Getting screwed in Evanston...

...and unfortunately not by some cute Northwestern co-ed..

I started working with a company in Evanston, and have found that apparently there is no place to park a motorcycle without getting a ticket. Tried parking on the street and received a ticket for being there more than 2 hours. Regardless of the meters- you're not supposed to be there that long, and I'm there all day. Tried the city parking garage, and was told by an attendant that if I park there again he'll ticket me-- there's a sign at the entrance that says 'No motorcycles'. I actually stopped a meter-guy on the street and asked him. His answer, after a deep thoughtful pause: park at the Metra parking lot a 1/2 mile away and walk there. BS.

Anyone been through this and/or have suggestions? Haven't contacted the city yet but am planning to. The office I'm working with is near Davis and Sherman.

thanks in advance,
D

Call your state rep to support this bill!

It's nice to know that at $3.50+ a gallon that they're banning motorcycle parking.

Operating a motorcycle. So easy, even a caveman can do it. Knowing how to ride? Priceless.

I feel for you. I lived in Evanston for awhile, and they never gave me grief about street parking for motorcycles anywhere other than downtown. But downtown they would hassle you for anything to do with parking a cycle.

I got a ticket when we put two cycles in one of the metered spots on Church St. The said it was one vehicle per spot. We were able to argue out of that one, but its such a hassle to have to go through that.

Call the city of Evanston and post up what they tell you. The city is aggressive about checking for expired parking meters. I've parked my bike in metered spaces downtown before and not gotten ticketed.

Haven't tried that one-- I was at the city garage on Davis. It's a bit confusing, as there are bikes in there on occasion. Maybe I was singled out bc I don't have a monthly pass. The sign is on the drop-gate, which is pretty typical, and probably for safety reasons. I was hit by one of these when I lived in NY.... held on tight and broke it in half with my gut . Wasn't hurt but got a mouthful from the manager. In that case, I ultimately worked out a deal where the gate was shortened such that a bike could fit around it (hence avoid possibility of getting hit). This one may turn out to be the same.

The frustrating part is, I'm not looking for a free ride here... my parking fees are expensed, but violations are not. Just don't want a hassle. Admittedly, there are plenty of times where I'm looking to score free parking, but that's a different story .

thanks for the interest-- will post up with progress.

brief update:

Contesting ticket, no word back yet. Called garage and did get verification from the manager that they do not allow motorcycles. Contacted the Maple St. garage and they do allow motorcycles. A longer walk, but better than a ticket.

Also wrote the city an email, trying to play up the business-end of the situation, which is completely valid here. Haven't heard back and will follow up with phone calls. The message:

"""""""""""""""""
I need to park a motorcycle downtown for full days to work with a downtown Evanston company.

I recently started consulting with a firm in Evanston, and have found that there is apparently no legal options for downtown parking. The city garage at Sherman plaza has a sign that indicates "No motorcycles". I ignored it for a day and received a verbal warning from an attendant, indicating he would ticket me if I parked there again. The next day I parked on the street. I received a ticket for being there more than two hours. This obviously will not work, as I need to be there for the entire work day. I spoke to a parking attendant on the street, and he suggested that I park 1 mile away in the Metra lot at Hinman and Main, and then walk to downtown. This also will not work, and is clearly discriminatory towards motorcycles.

Please advise. This is extremely frustrating, as I'm trying to park a legal, registered vehicle for a full work day to conduct business with an Evanston company. My consulting rates are not cheap, and it's unreasonable for me to charge my client for taking the time to walk a mile when there is plenty of parking available downtown. I can be contacted via email or mobile phone...

I've seen several parkings downtown that have "no motorcycles" signs. Those are the spiral-type multilevels, I guess they disallow motorcycles because they don't have level surfaces and do have very steep ramps.

I've never seen that but am really curious as to why. I mean maybe a safety issue but we just ride the brakes like a car would. Interesting.

The sign is on the drop-gate for a multi-level garage, which is pretty typical from a CYA safety standpoint. The concern is that a bike won't safely and accurately activate the gate. It's also not unusual, though, to still allow motorcycles in as long as they can fit around the gate while its down (as long as they pay, obviously).

Well, if you consider the number of people that ride bikes and cannot do low speed maneuvers, it actually makes sense, at least from the CYA perspective.

I think further correspondence should take a "green" approach. "I'm just trying to do my part to decrease global warming."

Yeah, I agree. You tend to see more inexperienced riders than ya do experienced. A lot of time on a bike doesn't mean you're doing it right.

I called the City of Evanston today, as a city resident. It is legal to park in any street parking space, as long as the bike is fully within a marked space. The bike cannot be between two cars between two spaces. More than one bike can be in a single striped space on the street--up to 3 bikes, I think, as long as the meter is fed. Most meters in downtown Evanston are 2 hours maximum. I have never been ticketed for parking my bike in a marked parking space on the street with a meter, as long as the meter hadn't expired.

It is illegal to park motorcycles on the sidewalk.

Regarding the parking garages, djamps' comment reflects what I was told by the parking garage manager. I called that office after I spoke to someone in the Parking Department at the Evanston Civic Center. Bikes are prohibited, or soon will be, from all city garages for just the reason djamps described.

It is possible to find street parking within a few blocks of the center of downtown without parking meters.

Good luck!

I work at Sherman and Grove and yes Evanston is so notorious for ticketing its ridiculous. They make hourly rounds and chalk tires for keeping track of vehicles. They ticket for anything. Iíve been wrongly accused on several occasions. Some I won and some I didnít. Luckily Iím allowed to park my bike (when I ride) in the alley.

Try the places marked in Red for non metered all day parking and always remember to read the signs to make sure there is no street cleaning that day. Parking is fairly easy if you go south of Dempster but then you have to walk.

(Mental note, need to stay out of evanston - unfriendly bike town).

Last weekend a friend and I were in Galena, we stopped for lunch at one of the places on Stagecoach road or trail (or whatever it's called). Anyways, looking for parking, we found a few spots, but found one that already had a bike in it, we parked in it and left the other spaces for cars.

The whole motorcycle ticketing thing, among other things, has got to be a money making machine for evanston.

quick update:

Regarding the city correspondence: I received a call from a woman in the parking dept who indicated I could park at the 12 hour meters at 1700 Oak, which is a bit of a stretch. I also have been in contact with a guy who works for the city-- actually he called me as he is a fellow motorcyclist and is very interested in getting an answer to this too . He has spoken with the managers of the garages and confirmed what I indicated, and is also going to work with the garages to have consistent motorcycle-friendly policies. More to come.

Generally, the concerns are 1) safety at the drop-gates, and 2) cheaters (either going around the gate or following a car through to park for free, which seems pretty dumb for a few reasons).

Thanks all for interest & poking around. Glad to see this issue getting some attention.

-Darren
